Confusing Community the Movie Update Has Donald Glover & Dan Harmon at Odds
Will this script ever be ready?
Summary:
- Community was an iconic NBC sitcom created by Dan Harmon.
- The show ran for 6 seasons from 2009 to 2015 and was set to get a movie sequel.
- Donald Glover previously confirmed that the script was finished, but Dan Harmon released his own update correcting the actor.
When Community was just a show on NBC, it already had a huge following. However, no one could have imagined that the innocent joke about "six seasons and a movie" mentioned several times throughout the show would become a prophecy of how it would end.
However, the excitement of the fans has been tested by various delays in the production of the movie. Of course, Dan Harmon wasn't able to finish his work on the script during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, and now there's a huge scheduling puzzle to solve in order to get all the cast members together.
What kept viewers' hopes up for the past month was Donald Glover's assurance that the script was finished. But according to Dan Harmon himself, even that is not entirely true.
Will There Be a Community Movie?
If there's one thing every Community fan has learned through the experience of patiently waiting for a few updates, it's that the movies take a long time to get made. So far, the movie that is supposed to be a love letter from the creative team to longtime loyal viewers hasn't even made it into production yet, but it continues to be the talk of the town.
Dan Harmon's latest update to Variety has once again reassured viewers of the team's intention to make the movie. However, the "almost finished" script doesn't sound too promising in terms of dates.
“I can confirm Donald Glover’s report that I told him the script was done, but I will also say Donald’s sources are so unreliable because the script is always ‘almost done’. What can I tell you about it — it’s set on the campus of Greendale Community College. I’m super excited about it, and we’re almost done,” Harmon said.
According to the sitcom's creator, the process of working on this script was an emotional rollercoaster for him, with some flashbacks to 2009 when everything was just getting started. When Dan Harmon spends some time crying about the beloved characters and how they've evolved over the years, viewers are likely to shed a few tears, too.
Along with Donald Glover, all of the other core cast members of Community like Danny Pudi, Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Ken Jeong and Jim Rash will be returning to their roles for the movie.
If you are interested in seeing what the Community sequel has to offer, keep an eye out for a release date.
Until then, you can always go back to the original series, which is available for streaming on Peacock TV, as well as Netflix and Hulu.
