One Hilarious Easter Egg That Connects Barbie to New Girl
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is full of Easter eggs, but this one can only be appreciated by the most hardcore fans.
Barbie’s Ken, played by the fantastic Ryan Gosling, is definitely now who we expected him to be prior to the movie. He is not actually a good guy, nor he is a villain. Like most residents of Barbieland, Ken is a complex character.
One Instagram user has uncovered a fun fact about Ken’s cowboy outfit. Turns out, he wasn’t actually the first to wear it. In fact, he seems to have stolen the impeccable look from another character, specifically Winston Schmidt from New Girl.
Schmidt cowboy-ed up for a fundraiser/costume party in the series’ pilot episode, which debuted back in 2011 – 12 years before Barbie saw the light of day. Still, the characters’ outfits look almost identical: a Western vibe, a cowboy hat, a fringed shirt, jeans, and a belt that goes well with everything.
There are some differences between the two, though. While Schmidt’s hat is black, Ken opted for a white one. The flower patterns on their shirts are also not quite the same (but similar).
Funnily enough, some fans spotted Ken’s stolen ‘fit even before Barbie officially premiered. Ken was sporting this now-famous ensemble in the trailer, and it caught the eye of one TikTok user, who immediately made the connection to New Girl’s Schmidt.

Back then, the official Barbie Movie account commented, “Schmidt’s got BIG Ken-rgy” (he does, though). This was the first and last time the Barbie representatives addressed this apparently coincidental Easter egg.
There you have it, folks. Schmidt has always been a trendsetter, and he has proven this again by being the original Kenough. Does that mean that Ken is just a thief? Maybe his profession is beach, but he can still have a side hustle…
