The Omen (2006) is extending its diabolic reach to another platform, so why not remember what makes this movie great — and why so many people hated it?

Summary:

  • The Omen (2006) is typically disregarded or hated by fans of the original 1976 movie.
  • While not the perfect reboot, the film holds its ground as a strong standalone horror entry.
  • The Omen (2006) became available on Hulu on December 1, 2023. You can also watch it on Vudu, Prime Video, and Apple TV.

It’s a common practice to curse the 2006 reboot of the original 1976 The Omen. Fans of the original movie claim that, as it goes, “everything is wrong with the remake,” but does it have any redeeming qualities? And, most importantly, should you watch it now that it’s available on four streaming platforms?

What’s The Omen About?

There are no plot differences between the two versions of the movie, so the following applies to both the 1976 and the 2006 iterations of The Omen.

Most married couples want to have a child sooner or later, but not every family can produce one. The Thorns are quite a respectable and well-set couple, with Robert, the husband, being the US ambassador in Italy, and they want to have a baby. Katherine, the wife, is pregnant, and everything is going well…until the birth.

The baby is stillborn, and, unbeknownst to his wife, Mr. Thorn switches it for another newborn whose mother supposedly died. Katherine never learns the truth but feels that her son doesn’t quite love her; Robert waves off her worries and protects the kid, Damien, at all costs. But after his fifth birthday, scary things begin happening.

More and more signs — or omens, if you wish — point in the same direction: the child is none other than Antichrist incarnated. But what can the Thorns do about it?

Why Do Fans Hate The Omen (2006)?

As it often happens, the original movie fans didn’t take the reboot lightly. Ever since its release, the film has been having a rough time, but did it deserve all the hate?

Admittedly, it didn’t.

Both the 1976 and the 2006 versions of The Omen were the brilliant products of their times, and the reboot even built upon some of the weaker sides of the original. From the significantly improved visuals (especially the color correction!) to the enhancements of some iconic death scenes, the 2006 movie did many things better.

If you count yourself among the avid fans of the 1976 The Omen, this century’s take might not appeal to you. But if you’re a massive horror fan who had no strong feelings about the original film, the 2006 version is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with this iconic story without leaving the comfort of modern cinema.

Where Can You Watch The Omen (2006)?

While previously, the movie was only available on Vudu, Prime Video, and Apple TV, it also became available on Hulu on December 1, 2023. If you have the standard Hulu subscription, you can hop right in without spending an extra cent to watch it.

The era of demonic horror popularity in Hollywood ended in the late 1970s — ironically, with The Omen (1976) — but if you’re down for some creepy diabolic stuff, this franchise will definitely suit you. Other than that, it’s just a must-watch for any horror fan since few franchises are as iconic as The Omen, and that’s a fact.
