Christopher Nolan Won’t Be Shamed For Loving This Ridiculous Franchise
The filmmaker once again praised the adventures of Dominic Toretto and his team, which he considers "tremendous."
Summary:
- Christopher Nolan 's films are known for being incredibly complex and very serious in tone
- But the filmmaker himself wholeheartedly enjoys the Fast & Furious franchise, which is often criticized for being quite goofy
- Nolan also points out that many viewers make a big mistake by seeing his films as puzzles to be solved
Christopher Nolan has made a name for himself over the years as a filmmaker known for creating thoughtful and very serious in tone projects such as Memento (2000), Inception ( 2010), and most recently Oppenheimer ( 2023).
With complex, multi-layered stories that sometimes require viewers to watch the movie at least a couple of times to catch all the foreshadowing and references, the director's work seems like a far cry from popular dumb-fun blockbusters.
The Filmmaker Is A Fan Of The Fast & Furious Franchise
Not long ago, however, Nolan surprised fans by confessing that he actually has a soft spot for the Fast & Furious franchise, especially 2006's Tokyo Drift, which is often criticized for its cliche storylines and outlandish, yet fun action sequences.
During his recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the filmmaker doubled down on his opinion, once again expressing how much he wholeheartedly enjoys the adventures of Dominic Toretto and his team.
Nolan stated that he considers himself a huge fan of this "tremendous" action movie series, which he frequently indulges in, and is not ashamed to admit that he absolutely loves them, despite the fact that they are often considered inferior to "classy" cinema.
You Are Not Supposed To Fully Understand Nolan's Movies
Speaking of "classy," the director also admitted that some of his films, which are sometimes criticized for being overly complicated and nonsensical, such as 2020's Tenet, aren't supposed to be fully comprehensible in the first place.
Nolan revealed that he is fully aware of the frustrations some viewers have had with his films, saying that while many fans perceive them as "puzzles" to be solved, they are actually "experiences to be had."
Fans point out that it's rather refreshing to see a director who's not a pretentious poseur, and who's not afraid to admit his love for some dumb-fun movies, despite being perceived as a "serious" creator.
They also bring up other similar examples, like Patrick Stewart being a fan of Beavis and Butt-Head, or Jodie Foster recently declaring her love for Team America: World Police, as it only adds to the relatability of Hollywood A-listers.
As for Nolan's next big project, the filmmaker hasn't given away any specific details yet, other than the fact that it will apparently be quite different in tone from the "dark and nihilistic" Oppenheimer.
