Chicago Med Bosses Tease An Unexpected Love Triangle

The relationship drama puzzles that Chicago Med presents to its viewers are getting harder and harder to solve. What seemed to be a fairly straightforward and obvious attraction in season 8 of the show now turns out to be much more complicated and has too many additional characters.

The friendship between Hannah Asher and Dean Archer was a point of interest for many fans last season, but Chicago Med did not rush its characters into anything romantic, allowing them to form a deeper bond. Then there was Archer's son with his own rather obvious interest in Dr. Asher. Now there's another man entering the picture.

Is there still a chance for Asher and Archer to see each other as more than friends and colleagues? Or have we all just hallucinated a spark that was never meant to happen? The Chicago Med production team has some answers.

Hannah and Archer Chicago Med Season 9

Talking to Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, who co-executive produce the series, TVLine tried to get a sense of what to expect from the relationship. While no spoilers were revealed, the Chicago Med bosses did have a few insights and theories to offer.

First of all, Dean's son was never really in the picture. Whatever interest he may have had in Dr. Asher was always very one-sided, so NBC's hit series won't be dipping into soap opera waters and making its heroine choose between a father and a son anytime soon. So this is already a big win for those who found such a storyline uncomfortable.

But that doesn't mean that Hannah and Archer will be handed their happy ending on a plate. There are no promises that they will even get to that point! While neither Frolov nor Schneider deny the feelings they have for each other, they are described as "very sublimated" at this point.

Instead, there's someone much more direct who has an interest in Dr. Asher and isn't afraid to act on it. Chicago Med's newcomer, Ripley, played by Luke Mitchell, will enter this drama and make it a love triangle.

“Hannah and Ripley are developing a friendship, which might well turn into something more romantic. <...> Archer can’t but help feel a little jealous, but he wouldn’t show it because he’s generous,” Schneider teased.

At this point in the season, it's hard to say what the characters will make of it. If Hannah and Ripley hit it off, and Archer finds someone to distract himself with, there could be a whole other year of them playing friends and denying their feelings.
