NBC is currently discussing renewals of all their shows, including the trio of One Chicago shows.

The previous renewals allowed the Chicago shows to run for three more seasons, and this is the first time in years that NBC has to make a decision on them.

Dick Wolf's team is set on trying to secure multiple-season renewals for the Chicago franchise, but it might not be that easy.

For hit shows like Chicago Fire, Med, and PD the most important cornerstone of the renewal process is their budget. When a show gets this big, its budget grows along, until the channel no longer wants to support it.

Considering the number of renewals currently on NBC's list, they'll have to cut the costs somewhere, and this is likely to be one of the main issues.

But with Wolf's franchise, the budget shouldn't be too much of an issue: he is famously conservative with the costs of his shows, which — alongside the ratings, of course! — is one of the reasons his franchise has kept running for so long.

If the situation remains the same, One Chicago should be safe in this regard.

There's also an altogether different issue, though: NBC will likely have to drop its 10 PM time slot to give it back to the local affiliates.

This primetime slot is key for Wolf's three-hour blocks, but the channel is likely to lose it by the next season, and this can also influence the process of the renewal discussions.

However, considering the popularity and ratings of One Chicago, it's pretty safe to say that these are the only two main issues.

If Wolf is ready to move his block in the future and keep the budget as tight as he's known for doing, there shouldn't be anything else blocking Chicago Fire, Med, and PD from receiving a green light for a new set of seasons.
