It’s not been even four episodes with Taylor Kinney back, and he’s already off again.

Summary:

  • Kelly Severide left Chicago Fire in Season 11 because of actor Taylor Kinney’s indefinite leave of absence.
  • Severide’s return in Season 12 was much-anticipated but turned out short-lived as he’s leaving the show again.
  • Whether it’s plot-related or a set-up to write Kelly off for good, Severide’s second leave in a row spells trouble for Chicago Fire.

Chicago Fire hasn’t been the same for half a season since Taylor Kinney and his character, everyone’s sweetheart Kelly Severide, left the show, and fans were understandably excited to see him return in Season 12.

But just three episodes in, Severide’s already out of the picture again! What’s even going on here?

Kelly Severide Is Chicago Fire’s Staple

Like every show, Chicago Fire has several fan favorites among the cast, and this title rightfully belongs to Firehouse 51’s veterans and their successors, Kelly Severide and Matt Casey. The latter two have always been the focal points of fans’ attention, which led to a pretty devastating reaction from the audience when they left the show.

Severide’s leave, in particular, upset all fans — even more so since it had to do with the actor, Taylor Kinney, taking an indefinite leave of absence. Having left in the middle of Season 11, no one has heard from Kinney for months. The audience was thrilled to learn that in Season 12, everyone’s favorite bad boy would return to duty!

The excitement of Severide’s return didn’t last long, though. After coming back in the premiere episode of S12, in the third episode, the firefighter is off again. It’s too early to judge whether it’s a temporary plot-related leave or a set-up to write Kelly off, but either way, fans are not happy. Some of them try to understand the writers’ decision.

“I think they want to make the show more about Stella leading and less about the original people. It's amazing the show has lasted with this cast for as long as they did! [But] I do not think it will survive crossing over to a new generation of firefighters. Boden, Matt, and Severide were too loveable,” Reddit user Ta-veren- pointed out.

And that’s only if the intent is to shift the focus, not completely get rid of the older generation of Firehouse 51 heroes. Honestly, we tend to agree with the sentiment: Chicago Fire might not last long if the latter is the case. We’re all here for the vets!
