Fans of Dick Wolf’s firefighting franchise can’t help but feel like there should be more firefighting in Chicago Fire than everyone (dramatically) sleeping with everyone else.

Summary:

  • Fans claim One Chicago shows rely too much on interpersonal drama and sex to move the plot.
  • Many viewers would prefer the shows to use different storytelling methods.
  • While some argue that it’s normal, others hint at Dick Wolf’s obsession with drama.

Chicago Fire — and the One Chicago franchise in general — is one of the most successful procedural TV shows with a massive fan base. But in Dick Wolf’s world of brave firefighters, they always forget to fight their inner fire, which results in way too much interpersonal drama and usually involves an unhealthy amount of snu-snu.

Fans Don’t Find the Sexual Tension in Chicago Fire Appealing

The discussion began on the show’s subreddit after one of the new viewers made a post about the weird amount of workplace sex in the One Chicago shows.

“Why do they make every character sleep with each other just to pass a storyline across? It’s like they introduce a character just for them to have sex with Severide at this point,” the post author yungxmeech wrote.

The author of the question admitted they’d only watched up to Season 4 of Chicago Fire and had grown increasingly confused about such a peculiar storytelling crutch.

Old-time fans of the show rushed into the comment section to confirm the author’s suspicion: there is, indeed, an unhealthy amount of coitus in One Chicago.

“That's lazy writing. Which is interesting that it's coming from under the Dick Wolf umbrella. <...> They've decided that's the only way that they can keep our attention. They've decided it but it's completely inaccurate. <...> I'm kind of sad to say I'm getting tired of the shows. And a lot of it has to do with that unnecessary drama,” shared Low_Copy4023.

Some Chicago Fire Fans Are A-Okay With All the Drama

Other new fans added that while they’re still in the early seasons of Chicago Fire, they had noticed the overwhelming amount of innuendo in the show as well. Some suggested that, perhaps, with such a stressful job when you work in close quarters with the same people 24/7, that’s just how things go, “but still it’s kinda bizarre.”

There were also viewers who claimed that “people are always hooking up in the workplace.” Amid the debates between the two groups, someone else casually pointed out that either way, it seems like virtually everyone in the fire department has either slept with Casey or Severide throughout the seasons. That’s…kind of true.

While some resorted to analyzing and comparing the Law & Order and the One Chicago franchises in terms of sex and drama, not everyone was interested in making a proper analysis. Why do that if you can just nod at the creator of it all?

“It's simply Dick Wolf thinking with his name I guess,” quipped libreeypuro.

Have you ever been bothered by just how much revolves around personal relationships, drama, and sexual intercourse in the best firefighter procedural or its sister shows? The One Chicago franchise definitely relies on those a lot, but we never thought so many fans were genuinely bothered by that…creative approach.

What do you think?
