Cannes 2022: 5 Biggest Movie Premieres Everyone's Going To Talk About
Biggest film festival on Earth revealed official selection for its 75th edition. The prestigious event will take place May 17-28 in Cannes, France. Known for its uncompromising cinematic diversity, with premieres of Hollywood blockbusters alongside indie and auteur projects, the Festival de Cannes has a reputation unmatched by its many counterparts.
Having your film's world premiere in Cannes is an honor many film professionals are only dreaming of, so each new Cannes line-up is eagerly awaited and meticulously discussed. The festival consists of several film programs, including 'Official selection', hosting world cinema's biggest names competing for revered Palm D'Or, and 'Out of Competition', uncompetitive section devoted to big-budget films from around the world.
Without further ado, here are the five most anticipated premieres of this year's edition:
'Armageddon Time' (dir. James Gray)
'Ad Astra' director's latest film is described as a sweet coming-of-age story about two boys trying to escape from a stuffy private school in New York City to Florida. Starring sir Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong, 'Armageddon Time' will surely receive some major awards buzz after premiering in Cannes main competition.
'Elvis ' (dir. Baz Luhrmann )
This is Luhrmann's triumphant return to directing after almost a decade since his 'The Great Gatsby' premiered to rave reviews. The film is obviously about the 'King Himself' with Austin Buter claiming the rock and roll throne. Cast is rounded up with Tom Hanks and Kelvin Harrison Jr co-starring. Prepare for another stylish trip to the past!
'Three Thousand Years of Longing' (dir. George Miller)
After returning with a bang with his critically-acclaimed 'Mad Max: Fury Road' in 2015, Australian director took his sweet time preparing for his next project. And now the wait is finally over. Starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton, the film will center on a tired scientist unexpectedly confronted by a Jinn, offering her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. Described as a romantic epic, the film is sure to cement Miller's reputation as one of the most visually stunning directors working today.
'Top Gun: Maverick' (dir. Joseph Kosinski)
Tom Cruise long-awaited sequel to his famous pilot movie was a long time coming. Blockbusters like this rarely appear on our screens, and the almost old Hollywood atmosphere makes this film a must-see for all fans of realistic epics. Co-starring Miles Teller will surely add some extra 'fathers and sons' thing going on. Watching Tom Cruise do his impossible stunts on a big theater's screens this May is surely going to be an experience to remember.
'Crimes of the Future' (dir. David Cronenberg)
Canadian provocateur's latest already caused some walk-outs (read about it here), so brace yourself for shocking experience. Starring Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart, the film is described as sci-fi thriller with elements of body-horror. Sounds like quite a combo! One of the most anticipated films of the festival, of course, because nobody really knows what Cronenberg has in store for us this time.
