The movie, exploring love for music and music for love, conquers the platform’s viewers.
Summary:
- Riverdale ’s Camila Mendes continues to be the star of Prime Video ’s movie projects with her new successful romcom.
- It tells a story about a musician being lost in his life and everyday melodies.
The world is still not over the glowing success of Upgraded, Prime Video’s romcom, showcasing the modern version of Cinderella, which starred Camila Mendes. The actress, famous mostly for playing Veronica Lodge in The CW teen drama Riverdale, is now getting more remarkable roles, including the one in the recently released platform’s feature, which is now holding the fifth place in Prime’s Global Chart, topping Upgraded.
Set in the Brazilian community in Newark, New Jersey, it revolves around a young man, who is obsessed with music and hears symphonies everywhere around him. Making a modest amount of money by performing his musical puppet show on the subway, he is severely criticized by his girlfriend and mother. However, the situation changes with the classic boy-meets-girl trope, when he suddenly stumbles upon Mendes’ heroine.
It may seem that the movie can be no more than a classic romantic comedy where a boy falls in love and his troubles quickly evaporate. No, instead the movie breaks the canon in a way that allows the Riverdale actress’ character to not serve as a mere support for the protagonist's somewhat delusional aspirations. On the contrary, her rejection of the restlessness that plagues the musician makes her quite a new kind of a romcom girl.
Nevertheless, it’s not really the most interesting aspect of this Prime’s chart climber. It turns out that it’s remarkably unique for its depiction of the main character’s musical vision of the world. Song sequences here involve the city's residents and sounds, as well as everyday objects and walls, on which the lyrics appear to be written.
Such an outstanding cinematic code was created by the movie’s leading actor, director and co-writer, whose life served as the movie’s biggest inspiration. We’re talking about Rudy Mancuso, the star of YouTube and Vine videos, who carefully filled his directorial debut titled Música with melodies, by which he gained the Internet’s love.
The movie is also a must-watch because it’s quite a rare example of featuring the Brazilian-American experience on screen. Mancuso, playing himself in Música, doesn’t forget to touch essential cultural issues, including the use of the Portuguese language.
Stream the soundful romcom starring the brilliant Mancuso and Mendes, who are now a couple in real life too, as it’s available on Prime.
