Calm Down, Margot Robbie Isn’t Bothered By The Oscars Snub
And you shouldn’t be either, at this point.
Summary:
- Throughout the 2023-2024 awards season, Greta Gerwig's Barbie has been competing with Christopher Nolan 's Oppenheimer for nominations and wins.
- As the Oscar nominations were announced, Barbie fans took to social media to support the "snubbed" Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig.
- According to the actress herself, she is not worried about not getting a nomination for herself, considering the fact that the movie as a whole was nominated 8 times.
Whether it's a terrible snub, an undeserved win, an inappropriate joke, or a scandalous guest, every event has a chance to end up all over social media the next day for all the wrong reasons. The Oscars are no exception.
While the chances of ruining the ceremony of the most prestigious award in cinema are significantly lower, every year people get unhappy about a certain movie, actor, or director being nominated and not being nominated.
However, the nominations for the 96th ceremony, which will take place on March 10, 2024, took everyone by storm.
Two of the most popular female creators of the year, director Greta Gerwig and actress Margot Robbie, did not receive their nominations for a collaboration on Barbie. And everyone from a random man on the street to Hillary Clinton herself suddenly had an opinion.
Margot Robbie About The Oscar Snub
While the fact that Ryan Gosling was nominated for his performance as Ken while the Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, was left out of her respective category is somewhat ironic, it should have remained nothing more than a meme. Instead, social media exploded with very hateful messages against the Academy.
When asked about the whole situation during a panel at a special SAG screening, Robbie finally closed the debate around the topic of her own snub. According to the actress, she feels incredibly grateful for all the recognition the film has received, and her attitude won't change depending on the Academy's decision.
“There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. <...> We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this,” the actress said.
In fact, 2023 was a great year for cinema, with many films competing and many actresses and directors deserving of recognition.
That's what audiences should have been paying more attention to, and exploring the work of those who were nominated, instead of fighting on the Internet.
Fortunately, there is still time to see all the films that made the Academy's list before the ceremony. But if rewatching Barbie sounds more like your cup of tea, Greta Gerwig's movie is available for streaming on Max.
