And guess who's to blame? A certain Marvel superhero.

Expectations were once high for David Ayer's Suicide Squad, but after it hit big screens, it was doomed to become the byword. Naturally, it's tough to be a DC fan these days; but few movies were just as disappointing as this 2016 movie.

Many things went wrong with it: from Jared Leto 's very questionable portrayal of the Joker to the weird storyline, unconvincing drama, and awkward editing.

The latter is particularly painful for fans, as they believe that the director's cut of the movie was actually a lot better than whatever came out in the end.

And it looks like Ayer himself has no intention of explicitly denying that. In this account on X, formerly known as Twitter, the director has revealed that butchering Suicide Squad was kind of the plan all along, because the studio wanted the movie to be something it wasn't.

"It’s normal for “final cutting authority” to be established in the contracts. Contractual final cut is virtually unheard of. And usually has caveats like running time and format," Ayer explained, elaborating on the studio's impact on the final cut.

But the most interesting part came when some fans brought up a certain Marvel superhero with a love for breaking the fourth wall, wondering "why [Warner Bros] said that [Suicide Squad] seemed like Deadpool. "

According to Ayer, the studio "did their best to engineer it into Deadpool."

Many fans agree that's where the DCU 's biggest issue lies: desperately trying to turn their movies into something they're not because that's what works for the rivaling company.

"Everything DC is trying to force itself into Guardians of the Galaxy or Deadpool, yet failing at both. Coming off more like Batman & Robin," said user ExiledMeatball.

It's not like there's no hope whatsoever. After all, now that DC is headed by James Gunn, many fans have their fingers crossed for some substantial changes in the studio.

Even the chances of the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad seeing the light of day are now higher. According to the director, Gunn made it clear that the Ayer version of the movie "would have it's time to be shared."
