BTS Facts About Mean Girls That Every Plastics Fan Should Know
They are not regular facts, they are cool facts.
Written by Tina Fey in her screenwriting debut, directed by Mark Waters, and starring icons like Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, this pop culture phenomenon has left an indelible mark on the teen comedy genre.
Here are some fascinating behind-the-scenes facts about the 2000s masterpiece that even true fans may not know.
Lindsay Lohan's Casting
Although Lindsay Lohan was already an established actress before Mean Girls, she initially auditioned for the role of Regina George, the film's primary Plastic.
However, the casting team felt that the role of cutie Cady would be a better fit for Lohan.
Moreover, Lindsay herself has expressed the desire to play a kind character rather than a mean girl as she didn't want to damage her public image.
Well, we are not complaining, Rachel McAdams did a really great job portraying the main antagonist, Regina George.
Tina Fey Was Regina George Herself
It turns out that the head writer wasn't as supportive in high school as her character, Ms. Norbury.
Tina Fey drew inspiration for the film from Rosalind Wiseman's self-help book for parents, Queen Bees and Wannabes, which explores the dynamics of teenage girls' social cliques.
But the actress knows about cliques firsthand. She was a member of one and, by her own admission, the "mean girl" of the group.
The film, and her portrayal of a sweet math teacher, served as a sort of redemption for her previous actions.
James Franco as Aaron Samuels
It appears that the beloved heartthrob and rebel had a chance to be a part of the Mean Girls world. As the casting team was searching for the perfect Aaron Samuels, James seemed to be the ideal fit for the role.
However, Tina Fey decided to give the role to Jonathan Bennett because he had a physical resemblance with her back-then co-worker Jimmy Fallon, whom she worked with on Saturday Night Life.
Why The Plastics?
Though Regina George's clique is referred to as the Plastics, they never actually use this term towards their group. But that's what their schoolmates call the iconic trio (plus Cady) and that's how fans remembered them.
However, there was also a very clever and interesting hint in the movie to prove the girls' origin. The skirts they wear during their Christmas performance were originally made of plastic.
This is how the costume designer decided to emphasize the girl's nature.
Kelly Osbourne Lookalike Actress
That's what the casting directors were referring to when they were looking for the actress to play Janis Ian, the queen of sarcasm and sass.
Lizzy Caplan, who at the end tried on the role of Janis, was initially considered to be too pretty and cute for this role.
However, she managed to impress the producers so much that she ended up as a perfect match for the stated criterion.
