Shonda Rhimes should’ve let them cook.

Summary:

  • Bridgerton is a Netflix period drama series based on the book series of the same name by Julia Quinn.
  • Each season of the show is centered around a certain Bridgerton sibling and their love life.
  • Season 3 was announced to be the season of Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, which was a controversial decision, as it goes against the book order.

Adapting any kind of book series into a show is always very difficult, as each creator wants to bring something of themselves into the picture without ruining the original source and upsetting the fans of the story. It usually turns out to be either great or terrible, with no in-between.

The TV show based on the Bridgerton novels by Julia Quinn, however, has had mixed results so far. It is, however, a very entertaining show. Produced by Shondaland and Netflix, it has enough of a budget to entice viewers with shots of the glamorous life of the aristocracy in the XIX century, and enough spice to keep them interested.

The first season was met with uncertainty, while the second, with a fixed pace and much more on-screen chemistry, and much less real scenes of intimacy, was considered an instant success. So was the show's prequel, Queen Charlotte, released in May of this year. Now Bridgerton has to produce another great season to make sure the winning streak continues.

Book fans, however, have already taken issue with Shonda Rhimes' creative choices.

Instead of following the order established by Julia Quinn herself and focusing on the love story of Benedict Bridgerton, the family's second-born son, she decided to mix things up and focus on a younger son, Colin, and his relationship with Penelope Featherington. As much as people love this couple, many believe that changing the order was a big mistake.

Why Is Bridgerton Season 3 Not About Benedict?

Like all the other siblings who end up as secondary characters in the seasons, Benedict has had his fair share of development in the background. From season 1, he discovers his relationship with art (and artists) and tries to find his true passion.

This was the character establishment he needed to become a lead in season 3, and many fans believe they would have gotten it if Benedict hadn't ended up at the center of controversy. Upon watching the first two seasons of Bridgerton, many viewers accused Shonda Rhimes of queerbaiting, as Benedict was involved with canonically queer characters.

Some ambiguous situations and metaphors that were spread throughout season 1 and sprinkled throughout season 2 led people to believe that the writers might be reconsidering Benedict's story. After all, what are the chances of eight siblings all ending up in heterosexual relationships?

On the other hand, the story of Benedict and his canonical female lover Sophie is incredibly popular with readers. Many fear that Shondaland and Netflix would face a lot of controversy if they changed it, so they needed more time to process their decisions.

What Can Save Colin and Penelope?

Both Colin and Penelope, who will be the focus of season 3, are not well-prepared to take the lead roles, fans fear. After everything that happened between Penelope and Eloise in the season 2 finale, many feel that she should have focused more on reconciliation rather than pursuing a romance with Colin.

Besides, the season 2 finale also showed how childish he really is and how insensitive he can be to her. In terms of character growth, Colin is not the most remarkable of the siblings, so it is questionable how his character will handle the romance.

Whether you believe that Penelope and Colin will find a way to get through the difficulties they have been put in, or you think that it had to be Benedict's turn and such a risky move puts the entire Bridgerton franchise on the brink of ruin, we will all be looking forward to the release of season 3.

For now, there is no news about the official release date, so keep an eye out for more news and behind-the-scenes updates.
