The reason is questionable, to say the least.

Even though all Bridgerton fans have already come to terms with the show bringing a lot of change to the original books, after the second season’s fiasco the producers had to reassure the viewers that moving forward they’ll be more faithful to the original material. However, it already seems like this promise was too hard to keep.

While there were only 4 out of 8 episodes of season 3 released, some of the changes were too apparent. The love lessons and Lord Debling aside, the show has erased the entire character of Penelope’s youngest sister, Felicity, as well as her precious friendship with Lady Danbury, who usually always stays close to the leading couple.

Penelope and Colin’s Children

While some people may find the fact that Lady Danbury wasn’t mending behind the couple this time around refreshing, in reality it was the only season where her impact was actually important.

In Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mr. Bridgerton novel Lady Danbury affects Penelope’s life so much, she names her firstborn daughter Agatha. Even though the couple goes on to have 3 more kids, Thomas, Jane, and George, Agatha’s name is the most important one for the show continuity. And now Bridgerton will have to change this detail too.

Speaking to Decider, Bridgerton’s new showrunner Jess Brownell gave her reasoning for putting Penelope and Lady Danbury’s friendship aside in favor of exploring her own storyline:

“We felt like we’ve watched two seasons of Lady Danbury being heavily involved in molding or shaping the main couple and we wanted to give her a storyline that was more about her. And not just about her being an accessory on the sidelines to someone else’s story. We wanted to put her more front and center,” she said.

But fans don't buy that argument. The only storyline we've seen from Lady Danbury so far has been the return of her brother, and the show has failed to explore that storyline for more than two scenes. Instead, we have seen her precious time wasted on the Queen's intrigues and shaping yet another Bridgerton's future with Francesca.

Hopefully, Bridgerton will make sure that season 3, part 2 does a better job of actually exploring Lady Danbury's character, but Colin and Penelope's book-accurate happily ever after will never be a possibility with such major changes. Tune in to Netflix on June 13 to see where the story leads for yourself.
