The reality TV show Gold Rush has been a hit with viewers since it first aired in 2010.

It has welcomed many stars throughout the years, and one of them was James Harness – a mechanic who quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his hardworking nature.

However, while he certainly had some great moments, he also experienced one breaking point that sent him over the edge.

James Harness joined Gold Rush during its first season and was a mainstay of the Hoffman crew. He earned a reputation as the mechanic of the team, priding himself on being capable of fixing almost anything.

However, we soon found out Harness went through significant personal struggles, which made an undeniable impact on his time on the show.

Prior to his appearance on Gold Rush, Harness was involved in an unfortunate car accident, in which he suffered a severe spinal injury.

During the first season, Harness worked hard and pushed his body to the limit, resulting in the old injury catching up with him.

Due to a lack of finance, he wasn't able to get the surgery he needed before but was offered the medical procedure by a medical center during the off-season.

Although the surgery gave him a temporary reprieve, it let him down much earlier than it was anticipated. So, the mechanic continued living with chronic pain, requiring more medicine in order to carry on working, which led to an addiction to pain medication.

This, in addition to his frequent absence in season 2, contributed to Todd's decision to let him go, which sparked outrage among the fans, who thought Todd chose money over friendship.

However, before season 2 hit the screens, there were also quite a few issues among the crew members. And the incident that sparked Harness' unraveling occurred during a particularly difficult first season.

The crew was struggling to find enough gold to meet their goals, and tensions were running high. During the latter half of the first season, Jim Dorsey left the Hoffman crew, much to the delight of many.

But their relief was short-lived, as an outsider, "Dakota" Fred Hurt, joined the team. Fred's critical approach was what proved to be the most challenging aspect for James Harness.

This tension between the two was a ticking time bomb waiting to explode and eventually ended in a dramatic confrontation. Adding to the existing problems Harness was dealing with, he reached his breaking point and shoved Hurt before others intervened.

The incident with James Harness is a powerful reminder of the toll that reality TV can take on its participants. While the high stakes and drama can be thrilling for viewers, the pressure and stress can have serious consequences for the people involved.

Harness' experience highlights the need for better support and resources for the participants, to ensure that they are able to manage the emotional, mental and physical demands of the job.
