Was this yet another clever manipulation by Gus?

The creators of Breaking Bad absolutely nailed it with their characters. They still spark discussions among fans a decade after the conclusion of the show. Gustavo Fring, as much of a bad guy as he was, is one of the most intriguing characters of the show. But there's actually a little fib going around about Gus.

There's a misconception that Gus, the meticulous and cold-blooded drug lord, had children. This belief stems from a scene where Walter White is invited to Gus's house for dinner. During this scene, we spot some toys on the floor, and Gus makes a comment about his soup, saying, "kids won't eat it."

But is this scene enough to conclude that Gus had kids? Breaking Bad enthusiasts on Reddit shared their reasons to believe he didn’t.

Some fans believe that Gus's comment about the children is just a clever move to mess with Walt's head. After all, Gus is known for his cunning and strategic mind.

The toys and the comment could have been a ruse to present himself as a family man, making Walt relate to Gus and at the same time underestimate him.

An attentive fan pointed out that Gus doesn't say, "THE kids won't eat it." Instead, he says, "Kids won't eat it." This subtle difference in wording suggests that he might be referring to children in general, not his own.

Another theory is that the toys belong to the children of DEA agents. Gus, being the mastermind he is, might have frequently invited DEA agents to his house and cooks for them. It's possible the toys are for their kids.

The actual script for the show, complete with notes, reveals that the writers hadn't decided on the truth about Gus's family situation when that scene was written.

“Some of the cabinets and shelves may have family photos, but we never want to get close enough to see any details of faces (in case we want to cast these roles in later episodes),” says the script.

Given his dangerous line of work and the risks associated with it, it's understandable that Gus would avoid having children to prevent them from becoming targets.

While it might have been a possibility considered by the creators, there is no evidence to believe Gus has children.
