Bored of TBBT and Friends? This 95%-Rated Sitcom May Be Even Better
If you’re feeling blue, consider binging New Girl—or check out its best moments to reevaluate what you think about comedy shows.
Summary:
- New Girl is a comedy show that’s on par with gems like The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn 99, etc.
- However, the series does everything differently when it comes to humor.
- It might be worth checking out if you’re craving some of that absurdist hilarious nonsense in your life.
Have you ever seen New Girl? A unique experiment that is not entirely unique—we’ve seen that dynamic before, multiple times: the show juxtaposes a girl with three, then four, guys in one apartment in LA. They’ve done it with The Big Bang Theory, IT Crowd, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia; producers love that premise, and the success of these shows might be the proof they’re not wrong for it.
New Girl, however, stands out—thanks to the dynamics and weird, weird, weird nonsense jokes of the main characters.
The first few seasons have characters finding their voice; a lot was improvised or developed by the actors. Schmidt is the poster boy for delightful character development on the show: he went from a douche jar to a neurotic OCD mess to a father and husband, never losing his footing and voice, which has us laughing in fits over so many things he said.
The show actually turns the tables on the showrunners in that it’s not about Jess against the guys; it’s more about the guys and the way they interact with the new girl.
Jess is formally considered THE main character, but the best comedy dynamics is between Schmidt, Nick, Winston, and then later Coach. They basically carry the entire series!
New Girl establishes from the beginning that it isn’t your ordinary comedy show; it’s a show with a bizarre sense of humor and jokes that just can’t stop coming; you watch an absurd scene, and it’s one joke after another, and some even get lost in all the voices because the characters have so much to say, they speak over each other, and every single phrase is golden.
Fans of New girl: you know the scene we’re talking about. Enjoy the popcorn machine scene to experience it all over again. (Or for the first time! Oh, how we envy you.)
New Girl is available to stream on Hulu, Peacock, or Disney Plus.
