Biggest Vampire Diaries Plot Twist That The Show Ruined Eventually
In season 6 of The Vampire Diaries, fan-favorite Elena Gilbert is put into a magical sleeping coma by Kai to punish Bonnie.
The curse is meant to ensure that as long as Bonnie lives, her best friend Elena would be unable to wake up, returning to consciousness only when Bonnie dies. Fans were shocked and devastated by the curse, which was said to be unbreakable. In a heartbreaking series of events Elena's friends each got a chance to say goodbye to her, as she was expected to sleep for decades whilst Bonnie lived out her life.
Fans accepted her fate, having felt that it was a fitting and emotional end for Elena, who played by Nina Dobrev for six seasons. Following Elena's exit the actress had taken to social media to express her gratitude to the show and her fans for the amazing journey they had had together, seeming to confirm that Elena's story on the Vampire Diaries had officially come to an end.
Imagine the surprise of fans when Elena returned two seasons later, just in time for the season finale. Understandably they were delighted to have her back, but they were more confused than ever before as to how the curse had been broken.
It seemed that Bonnie had somehow figured out a way to break the curse overnight and used her powers to do so, but the fact that the curse had been broken so easily took away from the gravity of Elena's situation and her character's departure.
If the curse had been so simple to break, why had they not solved it earlier? What was the point of her sleeping for two seasons if it had been that easy to wake her up all along?
In the end, Stefan sacrifices his life to save Mystic Falls and everyone in it, and Elena who has now woken up from her sleeping curse gets to live out her happily ever after with his brother Damon, both as humans.
Although the ending is arguably the best outcome for her character, fans had already said goodbye to her and her curse was meant to be unbreakable.
All the severity of the curse as well as her absence for two seasons were made pointless with her reawakening, and fans had mixed feelings about it. This was one of the few occasions in The Vampire Diaries where it seems that no rules are set in stone when it comes to the world of magic and the supernatural, or so the writers want fans to believe.
