Beverly Hills, 90210: Where Are The Stars of The Main '00s Hit 24 Years Later?
Unfortunately, the cult show was the first and last major project for most of the actors.
The series about the lives of high school students ran for exactly ten years – from 1990 to 2000. The most successful seasons of Beverly Hills, 90210 were watched by 14.5 million viewers in the US alone, and by the same number of fans around the world.
During this time, the main characters evolved from shallow high school students to complex personalities, dealing not only with common teenage problems, but also with more serious issues such as alcoholism and domestic violence.
Despite the fact that the main characters became world famous, Beverly Hills, 90210 was the first and last major project for most of the cast.
1. Tori Spelling – Donna Martin
Tori Spelling began acting in the early 1980s, but her real breakthrough came on Beverly Hills, 90210, which was produced by her father, Aaron Spelling. Although Tori stated that she was cast on a general basis and under a different name, she took an active part in the creation of the show.
According to Spelling, it was she who brought Shannen Doherty to her father's attention and offered her the lead role of Brenda Walsh.
After the series, Spelling tried to break into movies, starring in Scream 2 and Scary Movie, but her career did not progress beyond those projects – her last film role was Raye in the trash horror film The Last Sharknado: It's About Time.
2. Jennie Garth – Kelly Taylor
Jennie Garth was the highest paid actress on the show and appeared in all but one episode. During Beverly Hills, 90210's run, Garth starred in several low-budget TV melodramas and the action film My Brother's War.
After the show ended, Garth's career began to decline: in the 2000s, she starred in the sitcom What I Like About You and voiced supporting characters in American Dad and Robot Chicken.
In 2008, Garth returned to the role of Kelly in the reboot of Beverly Hills titled 90210, and a few years later she launched the sitcom Mystery Girls. In recent years, Garth has produced and starred in cooking and healthy living programs.
3. Shannen Doherty – Brenda Walsh
Shannen Doherty played the central character of the first four seasons, Brenda Walsh, and was the most experienced actress of the original cast. She has been acting since the early 1980s, and in 1988 she played one of the lead roles in the black comedy Heathers with Winona Ryder.
The actress left Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1993. According to some sources, the producers of the show insisted on her dismissal because of Doherty's unbearable character and her conflicts with other actors. Shannen herself said that she had decided to take her movie career seriously and that was the reason for leaving the show.
After Beverly Hills, 90210, Doherty played Prue in the hit show Charmed. Shannen's film career didn't work out: she had a cameo in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and starred in several low-budget thrillers. The actress also hosted the reality show Scare Tactics.
Shannen Dohertys has been battling breast cancer since 2015.
4. Jason Priestley – Brandon Walsh
Prior to Beverly Hills, Jason Priestley had episodic roles in the TV series 21 Jump Street and Quantum Leap. Like other actors, Beverly Hills, 90210 was Priestley's first major project.
After the show, Jason went into producing and directing: he directed music videos, TV movies (The Other Woman) and TV series (Grosse Pointe). But Jason hasn't given up his acting career either – his latest roles include the TV series Fantasy Island and Wild Cards.
5. Ian Ziering – Steve Sanders
Ian Ziering began acting as a child, but Steve Sanders was his first and last major role. In the late 1990s, he voiced the animated series Biker Mice from Mars.
Since 2013, Ian has been a regular in the trash horror franchise Sharknado, and played a supporting role in the TV series Swamp Thing.
6. Luke Perry – Dylan McKay
Luke Perry had a much better career than his colleagues. At the same time as Beverly Hills, 90210, Perry starred in the 1992’s movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Fifth Element. Beverly Hills-level popularity returned to the actor with the release of the series Riverdale, in which Perry played Fred, Archie's father.
Luke Perry died on March 4, 2019, at the age of 52, after suffering two strokes. Perry managed to star in the film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino, where he played the role of actor Wayne Maunder. In his free time, Perry was involved in charity work and environmental activism.
