What could be cooler than a tornado? Turns out, a bus.

On July 19, the epic disaster flick Twisters hits the screens for a thrill ride that puts you up close and personal with one of nature's most amazing and dangerous forces.

Twisters is the sequel to Jan de Bont's 1996 cult disaster movie Twister. And it's easily the best movie ever made about the destructive power of tornadoes.

The events unfold around a meteorologist named Jo and her husband, who go on a chase after a storm raging across the country. Some of the movie's scenes are still heart-stopping today – for example, the sight of a cow flying through the sky became one of the iconic moments in early 1990s cinema.

Twister became a true masterpiece of visual effects for its time; never before had such frightening yet fascinating tornadoes been shown, and the nearly half-billion-dollar worldwide box-office receipts confirmed this.

Jan de Bont Also Made the Best Action Movie of the 90s

If the name Jan de Bont sounds familiar, there's a good reason – this director made perhaps the most intense and crazy action movie of the 90s – Speed. And that is exactly the movie you need to watch to prepare yourself for the adrenaline-pumping adventure in Twisters.

Here, the main characters find themselves in a very unusual trap – the bus they are in hides a remote-controlled bomb that will automatically explode if the vehicle's speed drops below a certain value.

There is no time to think or stop. Speed is a movie about movement, adrenaline and non-stop driving. Jan de Bont's film started a trend for movies where the action takes place entirely in some kind of transportation, but no one has been able to top the original.

One of the most dangerous scenes in Speed is when the bus flies over a gap in a bridge. Jan de Bont decided to make the scene as realistic as possible, so he forced the film crew to use only practical effects.

After accelerating the car, the stuntman and the vehicle rose into the air and even crossed the gap, but when they landed, the bus fell apart. See the entire movie to see if you should worry about the characters…
