The new animated series goes back to the roots, but doesn't become a dull spectacle.

All episodes of the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader have been released. The project has already been renewed for a second season – and rightly so.

Of all the comic book characters, Batman is perhaps the most frequent guest on the big and small screen. Fans can argue about which films about Batman are better, Tim Burton's or Christopher Nolan 's.

But there seems to be one immutable truth: everyone who loves the Dark Knight simply adores Bruce Timm's 1992 animated series Batman – a noir that gave fans the voices of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill and the first appearance of Harley Quinn.

And Bruce Timm is back with a new Batman animated series. This is not a sequel to the classics – although Warner Bros. offered him such a project several years ago, and right now X-Men '97 proves that viewers want sequels to the animated series of their childhood. But Timm's work is even better.

What is Batman: Caped Crusader About?

Caped Crusader's action takes place in the 1940s. Batman is fighting crime in his home city of Gotham. However, the police begin to hunt him: partly because of his illegal status as a vigilante, partly because some of the law enforcement officers have long since sold out to the mafia.

The only people Batman can trust are lawyer Barbara Gordon and her father, Jim Gordon. Gradually, it becomes clear how mired in corruption and cruelty the city is.

Caped Crusader Doesn't Reinvent Batman's Story, But Does Something Better

Caped Crusader is not a reimagining of the comics – in fact, it is a return to the roots. The first Batman stories appeared in the 1940s, and at first they were noir, with mobsters in hats and corrupt cops.

Literally after the first few episodes, it became clear that such an entourage suited a man in a batsuit much better than modern realism.

In the series, Batman appears out of nowhere and scares people with a cape and mask – this gives rise to myths and legends, he is considered almost a vampire. This assumption is much easier to believe in the 1940s setting than in the 21st century. And the avenger himself often relies on his detective skills and physical fitness rather than high-tech gadgets.

Where to Stream Batman: Caped Crusader?
