Barbie Gets Review-Bombed, Sees Its Rotten Tomatoes Score Plummet
After its release, Greta Gerwig's new movie has already got caught on in weird controversies — and the review-bombing from unverified users plummeted its rating.
As pretty much the entire world is aware at this point, Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan 's Oppenheimer are the two most-anticipated (and most-memed-about) movies of 2023. Since both of the films came out on July 21, they've already achieved phenomenal success on different levels.
Gerwig's bright-pink adventure comedy's been smashing it. In terms of box office revenue, Barbie is an absolute hit: in its opening weekend, the movie managed to collect over $337M worldwide (of which $155M came from the US theaters), and the money-making machine isn't slowing down as we're waiting for the second weekend.
When it comes to reviews and ratings, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling 's hit has also been slaying as it had both the critics and the general audience absolutely thrilled with its funny jokes, great actor performances, iconic songs, and the overall pink (explosive-pink, as Barbenheimer fans claim) and joyful vibes.
However, there are always some people that can't enjoy a good thing. Some parts of the audience didn't exactly like that instead of just being a movie about a talking doll, Barbie had this doll talk about serious matters and provide social commentary. To be exact, Gerwig's movie addresses the issues of feminism, capitalism, etc.
This seriously got under some people's skin, and they went on to blast the movie in every way possible. Furious social media posts are one thing (and they're fine as long as you don't insult anyone), but many haters decided to go ahead and ruin Barbie's ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and other similar platforms.
While Barbie maintains a phenomenal 90% critics score and an 87% verified audience score, its "all audiences" rating has plummeted to 75% over the past few days. To avoid pointing fingers in vain, here's a quick hint: the "all audiences" score, unlike the "verified audience" score, doesn't require you to have actually watched a movie.
This, for us, serves as a clear indication of the currently-ongoing review-bombing. Barbie is still only available in theaters, so the people who couldn't confirm their tickets but left negative reviews (that created this huge gap between 87% and 75%) have clearly not watched the movie — they just decided to go and ruin its score.
Leaving negative reviews for a movie you haven't even watched is terrible manners, in case this wasn't obvious. It doesn't matter why you don't like it: if you want to leave a review, at least make the effort to study what you're talking about.
