Filmmaker Doug Dilaman discovered a great drinking game to play while watching Barbie and predicted a massive online controversy after the movie’s release.

The release of Barbie and Oppenheimer is pretty much on a countdown at this point, and the entire world of movie enjoyers is awaiting this Friday impatiently; those of high culture have already booked their double-feature tickets online, and us casual folks are simply going to charge the theaters as soon as they’re opened on July 21.

We all have exceptionally high expectations going to cinemas this Friday, but apart from expecting to watch a couple of great movies, we also assume what exactly are we going to watch. While we don’t think something unexpected will come out of Nolan’s biopic, there’s some sudden news about the nature and future of Barbie.

Doug Dilaman, a filmmaker from New Zealand, recently left a review of the movie on Letterboxd, and while he specifically avoided breaking the embargo, he shared some interesting thoughts. According to the filmmaker, Barbie is going to cause quite a lot of controversy online when it releases due to the sensitive topics it discusses.

“I had a vague idea of what to expect from this movie but it did not include ‘if you take a tequila shot every time the word 'patriarchy' is mentioned you will die.’ Not gonna rate this because it's officially embargoed and not sure if I would bother anyway,” wrote Dilaman in his review.

It sure is quite an unexpected revelation, and since Doug’s review, we’ve seen a few other people confirm that he was right. An adventure movie about a plastic doll definitely isn’t expected to address the issue of patriarchy and gender inequalities — but apparently, that’s exactly what it does. It’s a peculiar backdrop choice for sure!

“[Barbie] will probably be the most divisive movie of 2023 and I had an internally divided reaction, but it's certainly something and geez am I glad I'm off Twitter for the discourse. Oscar [nomination] for Margot Robbie, please?” Dilaman ended with a joke.

If we are to believe the filmmaker and the people supporting his claims then Barbie will create quite a different reaction online from what we’ve been expecting, but we’re down for it. When a movie sparks a discussion, it’s always a good thing; however, we still can’t get over the fact that this Saturday, Twitter will be filled with hashtags #patriarchy and #nuclearwar at the same time.

What do you think? Will you jump into the online debates?
