Avatar: Way of Water Could Fail in Box Office as It Brings Nothing New to the Table
At least that's how fans feel after watching the trailer.
With James Cameron 's Pandora franchise coming back to screens after more than a decade of waiting done by fans, the excitement can quickly turn into disappointment. Now that the final trailer for the Avatar: The Way of Water is out, many fans have reduced their expectations from the movie, mainly because the promotional material has not revealed anything new.
On one hand, it might be a good thing. After all, it would be weird for The Way of Water to spoil everything in the trailer, so the main surprises may be kept for the actual movie. However, the plot already seems way too familiar.
We see in the trailer that "humans are hunting us down again", and story-wise, The Way of Water appears to carefully follow the footsteps of the first movie.
Jake's son is establishing an obvious romantic connection with the daughter of the water tribe the Sulli family has joined, which is literally the same path his father has already taken more than ten years ago.
The only difference is that now the action will be taking place in a watery landscape, but, according to fans, that's not enough for the movie to become the third or fourth highest-grossing film — a condition necessary for The Way of Water to break even.
Still, the movie does boast incredible visuals, and many people point at the fact that The Way of Water will be released in China, becoming the first blockbuster under Disney to be released in the country since 2019.

Even modest predictions for the Avatar sequel opening in box office (currently, the movie is predicted to open to $150-170 million) do not scare true Cameron fans. After all, the original movie did open to just $77 million only to become the highest-grossing film in the world.
Still, it is a billion dollar question indeed whether the same story (if it does remain the same) will work a second time.
