Avatar's Most Hated Character Might Return in The Way of Water
If true, it might be the Na'Vi's worst nightmare.
You can hardly find an Avatar fan who would not despise Colonel Miles Quaritch — the leader of the humans' assault on Pandora who did not seem to care about a single living creature standing in the way to unobtanium.
Well, the new trailer for the Avatar sequel, titled The Way of Water, has sparked speculations that Quaritch might have survived his death and will be back in the second movie — potentially to terrorize the Pandora people even more.
A signature tattoo on one avatar shown in the trailer has fueled the theories that Quaritch's memories were somehow transferred into a specifically-created avatar. Fans, however, are not sure about whether humans were necessarily behind that, not ruling out the possibility of some kind of dark arts being involved.
If Quaritch is indeed to return, then the sequel might already have a villain. Still, some fans are struggling to find an explanation as to how exactly the Colonel managed to survive. Redditor Just2MakeAPost recalled that James Cameron, the franchise's director, had already introduced a way that could easily explain everything.
"In Cameron's book, Tech Noir, he touches upon an older story idea of soldiers having their consciousness recorded. I bet you a nickel that Cameron is pulling from a story he's had stewing in his head for years," the user argued.
There was no official confirmation of Quaritch's comeback in the sequel. In the original movie, portrayed by Steven Lang, the cruel colonel has garnered a lot of hate from Avatar fans as he led the assault on Pandora, killing Na'Vi with no remorse. However, at the end of the first film, he was killed by Jake.
Avatar: The Way of Water is set to hit theaters on December 16, 2022, after more than ten years in the making. Cameron has three more sequels planned, with their release scheduled for December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.
