We've waited so long and this day has finally come.

On November 4th, the second and final episode of the fourth season of Attack on Titan premiered. Behind us is a story that has spanned 10 years and nearly 90 episodes, full of unexpected twists and turns.

It's time to refresh your memory about who fights with whom, where it all happens and who the Titans even are.

What Happened in Attack on Titan Season 1?

Attack on Titan kicks off as a brutal tale of survival. We are introduced to Eren, Mikasa, and Armin; the kids live in the city of Shiganshina, surrounded by a huge wall that protects them from the flesh-eating giants commonly known as Titans. The protection, however, doesn't last too long.

In the very first episode, Armored and Colossal Titans destroy it almost effortlessly. The breakthrough allows many giants to enter the city, where they commit a massacre which kills many people, including Eren's mom.

The three friends enroll in the Cadet Corps and eventually join the Survey Corps to dedicate themselves to fighting against the monsters. The Titans then attack again, and Eren almost dies as he tries to save Armin. A second before death, he suddenly transforms into Attack Titan.

On an expedition beyond the Walls, the characters encounter Female Titan. It is eventually revealed that the unlikely Female is Annie, Eren's batchmate. A piece of the wall surrounding the city breaks off, suddenly revealing a face of a giant sleeping titan behind it. It turns out that the very walls protecting the citizens from the Titans were made... of the Titans themselves.

At the beginning of the second season, the Beast Titan appears, who has a unique power – he can control other giants. During the next attack, it turns out that there are hidden secret agents among the scouts – Reiner and Berthold, Armored and Colossal, who destroyed Shiganshina and killed Eren's mother. They kidnap Eren, Ymir and Christa.

It is also revealed that Christa's name is actually Historia Reiss, and she is the only surviving descendant of the royal Reiss family.

In the third season, Historia becomes Queen of Paradis. The royal dynasty has the power of the Founding Titan – a super-powerful being capable of controlling its relatives. It turns out that most of the royal family was killed by Eren's father, Grisha, who tried to seize the power of the Founding Titan.

His plan failed, and he had to sacrifice himself by transferring the powers of the Attack Titan to him. Especially for Eren, Grisha left all his notes about titans in the cellar.

The cellar and its records become the next target of the Survey Corps. Reiner, Berthold and the Beast Titan are waiting for them to fight.

The Beast reveals his identity: his real name is Zeke, and his another son of Grisha.

Eren finally finds Grisha's notes and learns that beyond the sea lies the vast continent of Marley.

Once upon a time, the Marleyans fought the Eldians and won, and an army of Titans was captured within the walls – the so-called Rumbling, which could destroy Marley if necessary.

The Eldians who remained in Marley became an oppressed minority, and Grisha was one of them. He married Dina, a royal heiress who became the mother of Zeke. But little Zeke betrayed his parents and turned them in to the Marley authorities.

Grisha and Dina were sent to the borders of Paradis, where they learned where the giants came from – Titans were former Eldians.

Grisha was saved from death by Eren Kruger, who turned out to be a secret Eldian agent and the bearer of the Attack Titan. He transfers his abilities to Grisha, and urges him to complete his mission. Before he dies, Kruger reveals that one of the Attack Titan's powers is the ability to see the future.

The fourth season depicts the life of contemporary Marley, leaders of which are set to attempt to retake Paradis but are ambushed by the Paradise army first. The young Eldians unintentionally kill Sasha, while Eren defeats the War Hammer Titan.

Under Floch's direction, the Yeagerist movement has arisen in Paradis. They support staging a coup and bringing Eldia back to power with Eren's assistance.

Zeke's plan is to forcibly sterilize all Eldians. Eren has another plan – to activate the Rumbling, release Titans and trample on the rest of humanity. Eren and Zeke find themselves in the Coordinate, a place outside of time and space where the ancestor of all Titans, Ymir, lives.

Traveling through memories, Zeke sees that it was Eren who ordered his father to kill the royal family. Zeke orders Ymir to strip all Eldians of their ability to reproduce.

At that moment, the Rumbling begins. Titans break out of the walls, while Eren transforms into a giant titan and leads them. Former enemies, the Marleyans and the Survey Corps, unite to stop Eren and save humanity. They are heading overseas to stop Eren from destroying the world.

The Survey Corps members are flying in a plane when Floch appears. He pierces the plane's fuel tank with a pistol shot, but dies at the hands of Mikasa. The Titans approach them, but the plane will not start – it needs time for repairs. Hange sacrifices herself to buy time.

Eren's former friends realize that the only way to save the world is to kill him. Now that’s where we transport ourselves straight into the final season and the emotional rollercoaster it has undoubtedly prepared for us.
