At This Point, Billions Is Only Good For Hate-Watching: Fans Say Show Jumped the Shark
In fact, they've been saying so since season 6.
Warning: spoilers ahead for Billion season 6 and 7
Season 7 of Showtime 's Billions had the fandom lowkey hoping for the series to get better after lackluster sixth chapter.
Even though it enjoys a picture-perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, the audiences are way more merciless: with a 24% audience score and a lot of grievances on Reddit, Billions clearly had better times.
According to the majority of fans, it's only possible to hate-watch the show now, since it clearly jumped the shark in season 6, and the new season provides no hope for a miracle.
"It's turned into a Mike Prince (Trump) bash crusade with Wendy leading the misguided heroic charge to stop the white ambitious billionaire from becoming president. It's a train wreck from episode one, still hoping it'll play out to be something better," Redditor Latter_Sir4582 summed up.
Season 7 has only released three episodes so far, so there's plenty of time to still be optimistic. For many fans, sixth season's main problem was the absence of Axe, a fan-favorite character who, by the way, made his way back in season 7.
With Axe's return, some fans believe there is still a way for Billions to return to its former glory. However, him saying goodbye in season 7 episode 2 had many fans thinking that he's likely to step back into the shadows for the upcoming episodes, if not for the rest of the show.
Well, the second option is unlikely, since it has been reported that Damian Lewis, the actor who portrays Axe, signed up for six episodes in season 7. So maybe he'll be swooped back just to save the day and shine in the season finale.
Still, expectations are low in the Billions fandom. But these days, hate-watching has brought many shows way further than everyone thought, so maybe it's too soon to bury the Showtime drama — even if it's not what it used to be.
Season 7 episode 4 will premiere on Showtime on September 3.
