Robert Pattinson’s first memory about his breakthrough role of Edward Cullen is about a slightly embarrassing and absolutely hilarious trauma his bottom suffered.

Summary:

  • The role of Edward Cullen in Twilight became a major breakthrough in Robert Pattinson ’s acting career.
  • Due to the movie being filmed from the ending, the final fighting scene was shot on the first day.
  • Robert Pattinson immediately suffered a butt injury, and it became his first real memory from Twilight.

For aspiring young actors, finding a breakthrough gig is essential, and not all of them get so lucky. Robert Pattinson did: after portraying the stone-skinned vampire Edward Cullen, his career skyrocketed. Unfortunately, his character’s physical properties didn’t relate to Pattinson, and he suffered perhaps the most embarrassing injury of his entire career on the very first day of shooting.

Twilight Filmed Its Finale First, Because Reasons

Writers and screenwriters often begin creating their stories from the finale: they need to understand exactly what endgame all other events in their text will work toward. But when you already have a script, the order of shooting matters little, especially if you’re not working with child actors who tend to grow up too quickly for comfort.

The original Twilight movie’s director Catherine Hardwicke still decided to start from the ending. The very first on-set day for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart saw them fight the primary antagonists, immediately throwing the actors into action… And Pattinson was evidently not quite ready for so much action from the get-go.

Robert Pattinson’s First Twilight Day Didn’t Go as Planned

The backwards filming scheme didn’t exactly work out for Robert Pattinson: it was his very first day on the set, and he didn’t expect to be thrown into action so quickly. The James vs Bella and Edward fighting scene immediately traumatized the actor.

“We were doing the fight scene at the end of the first [film], and I tore my glute — well, almost tore it, basically in my second shot of the whole movie, of the whole series! [They] had to get a physiotherapist to come in and massage my butt cheek for the rest of the day. <...> I was at my peak, my physical prime, and then… Ass done! The ass is out,” Pattinson joked when speaking to MTV.

Imagine finally landing your lead role, working out for months on end for it — only to immediately have your butt injured in the first few hours? Perhaps, it’s not so much the Twilight franchise itself why Pattinson doesn’t like his breakthrough role but the happy memories he has about it.
