Anne Hathaway Used to be Rude and Arrogant, but This One Case Fixed Her for Good
Sometimes, all you need is a little gentle push to become better… After a royal slip on your part, that is. Anne Hathaway went through this kind of experience.
As of now, Anne Hathaway is pretty much everyone’s sweetheart… Save for the people who somehow still can’t forgive her for not being happy at the Oscars many years ago.
Apart from that, there’s nothing about Anne that isn’t likable: fans love her for being friendly, open, down-to-earth, humorous, and a great actress, too.
Hathaway seems like one of the least problematic or controversial people in Hollywood right now, and anyone who’s spoken to her in person relays that she’s really wholesome and cheerful. But she hasn’t always been like that; in fact, she used to be quite the opposite back in the day and had to transform herself.
After being treated like actual royalty by her director, Garry Marshall, on the set of The Princess Diaries, the freshman actress became a very difficult and unpleasant person to have around. Hathaway’s attitude to other people was rather rude and arrogant, and she’s very ashamed of that period of her life these days.
“I was 17 when I made The Princess Diaries. I was at the nucleus of such a large organism, and [the director] made me feel that I was the most important person on set every day. And from there… Sometimes when I would talk to adults, they would be taken aback by how forward I was. And I was very oblivious to it,” shared Anne.
This has lasted for a while, but it was just a gentle push from a friendly person that put the actress back on the right track.
It happened on the set of Rachel Getting Married, and once again, it was the movie’s director, Jonathan Demme, who helped Anne realize just how obnoxious she has become… In the sweetest way possible.
“One day on Rachel Getting Married, Jonathan altered something in the script, and I said, ‘Jonathan! Why did you change this?! It was better the other way and here’s A, B, C, D, E, F, G why!’ And he smiled at me and said, ‘Hey, Annie? Maybe instead of telling me why I’m wrong, you could ask me why I made the choice I made.’ I instantly felt so ashamed. I didn’t mean to be disrespectful to people, but that’s exactly what I had done for years,” explains Hathaway.
The actress has completely changed ever since, and now you won’t really hear complaints about Anne’s character.
This may have taken long enough, with nearly seven years between The Princess Diaries and Rachel Getting Married, but it worked out in the end, and Hathaway is now one of the most likable actresses.
