Anne Hathaway Did This Insane Thing to Get Her Breakout Role
There was a time before Anne Hathaway became a hugely successful actress with numerous accolades, and there is actually a funny story behind how she landed a leading role in The Princess Diaries.
Believe it or not, in an interview for Entertainment Tonight, Hathaway revealed that she got the part that made her career after just one audition.
She was actually on her way to New Zealand to film another movie, The Other Side of Heaven, but she happened to have a 26-hour layover in LA.
Anne begged her agent to get her an audition, and they delivered. She got to showcase her talent for The Princess of Tribeca (the original title of The Princess Diaries), and the rest is history.
Are you curious as to why Hathaway was cast after just one audition?
It turns out that director Garry Marshall liked Anne so much that he gave her audition tape along with the other girls' (who did the full-on screen test) to Disney, and the company just loved Hathaway right away.
Anne truly was perfect for the role – or rather, she perhaps made sure that she was. As you know, in the movie Mia is known for her clumsiness (and we find that out very early on).
What did Hathaway do to secure the job? She did the clumsiest thing possible, and the role was hers.
According to Vogue, the actress recalled that at some point during the audition, she just got "really nervous" and "fell out of the chair," and apparently that was enough for Garry Marshall to give her the part. In fact, Hathaway believed that it was the thing "he was most impressed with."
There is some speculation as to whether the star fell on purpose or by accident, but we suspect that Anne will take this secret to her grave.
Anyway, there couldn't have been a more perfect Princess (and later Queen) Mia, so we are happy that Hathaway got her breakout role regardless!
Without it, we would probably never have The Devil Wears Prada, Love & Other Drugs, Interstellar, and other great movies starring Anne Hathaway ( or at least they wouldn't be as good)!
