Andrew Garfield Was Once Told He Was Too Ugly for The Chronicles Of Narnia
One of the most attractive actors ever Andrew Garfield was once refused a role because he wasn't handsome enough.
This is a revelation one could hardly believe, but in fact it is 100 percent true. The Spider-Man actor told Entertainment Tonight that he did not make it to The Chronicles of Narnia some 17 years ago exactly for that one reason – the way he looked.
"I remember I was so desperate. I auditioned for Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia and I thought, 'This could be it, this could be it,'" the actor recalled.
Garfield said in the end it was down to him and "handsome, brilliant actor Ben Barnes" who "ended up getting the role". But "I was obsessed, I thought 'why not me, why not me?'" he asked himself. Andrew kept bothering his agent with his inquiries only to hear her nail it.
"She eventually just broke under my incessant nagging, and she was like, 'It's because they don't think you're handsome enough, Andrew.'" The Golden globe winning actor reiterated that "Ben Barnes is a very handsome, talented man," and that "in retrospect, I'm not unhappy with the decision and I think he did a beautiful job."(via)
Garfield was not chosen to play Prince Caspian but his portrayal of Spider-Man in the superhero movies The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), and later in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) was something we all adore.
Talking to GQ UK, the Oscar nominee said that accepting the life-changing role at such a young age – and Garfield was only 26 at the time – was quite an interesting experience.
"I feel that about myself as a 26-year-old. I'm like, 'F*ck, that was a lot to take on. It's a sh*t-ton to take on,'" Garfield said adding that he wanted to take that load and he felt he was ready. "I was so up for it. It didn't feel heavy," he recalled. Still, he admitted that there were certain elements and he "sensed danger for myself, in terms of fame and exposure."
Garfield also said that it was important to him to be a theatre actor first, because that "feels evergreen." If he could do theatre for the rest of his life to a small audience of 50 people a night his life would be satisfying. And he really meant it. But when asked by Variety if he would love to return and play Peter Parker again Andrew Garfield joyfully said he would absolutely love it!
"If there was an opportunity to step back in and tell more of that story, I would have to feel very sure and certain in myself," the actor said.
