Here comes a must-see procedural straight from Europe.

Jennifer Lopez-starring sci-fi flick was intended to reign supreme in Netflix ’s global top for a long time, even though it gained a shameful 19% of critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it took only a week for it to lose its first place in the chart.

Atlas is now topped by a very unlikely thriller that, however, has managed to attract quite a strong viewership this weekend. It’s clearly a must-watch for those who enjoy twisted police procedurals and shocking true crime stories about serial killers.

The movie starts by depicting the aftermath of a relentless murder, as a girl’s body is found on a beach with her lips cut off. It turns out that it’s really reminiscent of another murder, but the point is, it happened 15 years ago, and that case was closed unsolved.

The prosecutor tries to reopen it while investigating the new crime, however, he gets an order to stop it immediately. In search of the truth he teams up with the victim’s mother, who is a strong-willed judge, and together they are about to find the guilty ones.

The first half of the film is similar to a classic procedural flick, but as the investigation progresses, we see a number of insightful, yet nightmarish flashbacks that shed light on the truth. Thus, it gradually turns into a psychological thriller about a severe trauma.

Be ready for disturbing scenes of sexual violence and assault, as the movie isn’t afraid to show us the darkest sides of human beings and the things a fallen person can do and remain fault-free. Being uneasy to watch, this film is quite important, indeed.

Titled Colors of Evil: Red, it is based on Małgorzata Oliwia Sobczak’s crime novel and is created by the Polish filmmaker Adrian Panek, who is best known for his 2018 horror Werewolf. His collaboration with Netflix seems to be fruitful enough, as the new film is a hit nowadays.

Polish movies are rare guests on the platforms’ charts, so it’d be a curious cinematic experience to watch a non-American take on crime stories. Check out Colors of Evil: Red, as it’s now available for streaming on Netflix.
