1. American Nightmare (2024)

This three-episode docuseries from director and producer Bernadette Higgins and Felicity Morris (The Tinder Swindler, 2022) looks at the kidnapping of Denise Huskins from her California home in 2015. She and her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, were awakened in the night by intruders, who tied them up, sedated them, and took Huskins away.

Quinn was told there would be a ransom demand and warned not to contact the police or they would kill Huskins. What followed was a media frenzy, especially when Huskins was released by her captors two days later without a ransom. Authorities were convinced the couple had staged the kidnapping in a bizarre real-life Gone Girl scenario. But as the series shows, the couple were the innocent victims of a terrible crime and were treated horribly by the police and the public.

2. American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders (2024)

This series has impressed critics and divided fans. Director Zachary Treitz tells the story of photojournalist Christian Hansen investigating an alleged government conspiracy, following in the footsteps of a murdered reporter. The reporter, Danny Casolaro, was convinced he had uncovered a secret government surveillance network and the implications of links between organized crime and the U.S. intelligence community. Casolaro's murder halted his investigation, and now Hansen is searching for answers.

3. Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife (2023)

Another divisive title, but this time both critics and audiences have mixed feelings. Helmed by veteran docu-series director Ben Steele, the doc follows the case of Italian surgeon Paolo Macchiarini, who came under intense scrutiny for the deaths of several patients under his care after his experimental tracheal replacements. Following the story of his rise, fall, and the subsequent mission to bring him to justice, you should expect to feel a gamut of emotions while watching this one.

4. Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer (2021)

Directors Tiller Russell and James Carroll bring us to California, June 1984, when the local community was terrorized by a serial killer called The Night Stalker. His real name was Richard Ramirez, and his modus operandi was to enter his victims' homes at night, commit horrific assaults and murders, and demand that his victims profess their love for Satan.

After a gruesome crime spree that lasted more than a year, Ramirez was finally captured by a mob of justifiably angry citizens, who beat him so badly that he thanked the police when they showed up and arrested him. He received 19 death sentences for his crimes, but died of natural causes in prison in 2013 while still awaiting execution. The series has been criticized for falling into the trap of true-crime sensationalism, but is still considered an accurate portrayal of the Ramirez case.

5. The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez (2020)

Few true crime stories hit as hard as this one. Gabriel Fernandez was only 8 years old when his mother and her boyfriend beat him to death for not picking up his toys. But that beating was only the final atrocity committed against this innocent child, as the investigation revealed months of cruel and shocking abuse.

Director Brian Knappenberger has received critical acclaim for this docuseries, and is noted for reporting that a therapist was kept on call for all involved throughout the filming process due to the disturbing nature of the material.

6. Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal (2023)

IMDB rating 6.9/10 | Rotten Tomatoes rating 82%

The plot of this film sounds so ridiculous at first that you could be forgiven for thinking it came from a bad soap opera rather than a true crime piece. But as directors Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason demonstrate, it is absolutely true. A wealthy and prominent South Carolina family seems to be living the dream. But when Mallory Beach dies in a boating accident, it sets off a chain of events that reveals murder, scandal, cover-ups and corruption. Most critics agree that it is a faithful adaptation of the true story.

7. Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)

Finally, we come to one of the most enduring mysteries of modern times. What happened to Cecil Hotel guest Elisa Lam? The Canadian tourist went missing, and her body was found in a water cistern atop the hotel. Later, a video of her behaving erratically in a hotel elevator went viral, further fueling the mystery surrounding her final moments.

In his follow-up to 2021's Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer, veteran true-crime documentary director Joe Berlinger takes us through these events and the speculation that followed, leaving the Cecil Hotel forever infamous.
