All Netflix Live-Action Anime Adaptations That No One Asked For
Netflix's newest anime adaptations: now with 100% more awkward acting!
It looks like Netflix is on track to infuriate as many anime fans as it can by announcing more and more live-action anime adaptations. It turns out that a My Hero Academia movie is currently in the works at Netflix, and the news is making the number of anime adaptations the platform is currently working at three.
Aside from My Hero Academia, Netflix is set to adapt the iconic manga and anime Death Note, as well as One Piece. And fans of all three legendary anime series are far from happy about that.
According to fans, "nobody asked for that" and "nobody wanted that"; people keep insisting that virtually all live-action anime adaptations end up being disastrous. Instead of adaptations, fans say, Netflix should have really considered making more original anime shows, and "not ruin the masterpieces".
However, Netflix is not planning to stop adapting anime series. Here's what's coming:
My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia is the newest project in the anime adaptations line-up, set in the world where 80 percent of people are born with a "quirk", or their own superpower. However, the main character is in the unlucky 20 percent — truly bad news for someone whose greatest dream is to join the prestigious superhero academy. He, however, does not want to give up on his dream and goes anyway.
The premiere date is yet to be scheduled, and casting and plot details are being kept under wraps.
Death Note
When it comes to Netflix's other anime endeavor, Death Note, the only hope for fans is in the fact that the Duffer brothers, who are responsible for Stranger Things, are in charge of the upcoming adaptation. Besides, its writer, Halia Abdel-Meguid, is a long-time Death Note fan and a Japanese speaker.
Still, Netflix has a lot to make up for after its 2017 attempt at adapting Death Note. Back at the time, the movie was grilled by both fans and critics, with people accusing Netflix of white-washing the series and ruining the storyline completely.
One Piece
One Piece is the 1997 manga that got so popular it was quickly turned into an anime. It follows the story of Monkey D. Luffy. He is a pirate who ate a devil fruit called the Gum-Gum fruit as a kid, with his body becoming rubber-like after that, stretching, bending, and inflating at will.
The filming for Netflix's One Piece adaptation ended in August 2022 and is currently in post-production, so it will probably be the first to hit screens, even though the premiere date has not been scheduled yet.
