One character who connected numerous universes.

There is no shortage of great characters on television, praised and loved by millions of viewers. However, there are some characters that can only be described as legendary. And while the actors who portrayed them may be gone, their legacy will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved them.

Richard Belzer's Detective Munch, famous for blending procedurals and sitcoms from different networks with ease, is certainly one of them.

Here is the complete list of shows where you might have seen Detective John Munch (besides Law & Order) in chronological order.

1. Homicide: Life on the Street

This NBC crime drama was the show where the character originated and became widely known to the public. Detective Munch was created by Richard Belzer as a cynical detective who is too caught up in conspiracy theories, which explains his popularity.

2. The X-Files

It would’ve been a crime not to let someone so invested in various conspiracies take a look at what Special Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder were working on. Munch appeared in an episode called Unusual Suspects (S5E3) and predictably stole the scene.

3. The Beat

Though the show didn't last long and wasn't well received by critics or viewers, it did give audiences one of the iconic Detective Munch cameos right in the second episode of its first (and only) season.

4. Arrested Development

Although Richard Belzer made two cameo appearances on the show, only one of them was in character as Munch. In one episode, Exit Strategy (S3E12), he made one of the best Martha Stuart jokes you'll ever hear on TV, so it's definitely worth checking out.

5. The Wire

The greatest HBO crime drama, which still makes every other list of the best shows of the genre, also featured a cameo by John Munch. If you were to watch the episode Took (S5E7), you would find out that the detective actually owned a bar in Baltimore.

6. 30 Rock

Detective Munch first appeared on 30 Rock in 2011 in the episode ¡Qué Sorpresa! (S5E13), and then again two years later in an episode called Hogcock!/Last Lunch (S7E12). As with Arrested Development, the character fit perfectly into the sitcom universe.

7. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

John Munch's most recent appearance dates back to 2015 — he popped by the Netflix comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Though uncredited, the fan-favorite character couldn't hide from viewers, drawing extra attention to Kimmy Goes to the Doctor! (S1E4).
