After 7 Years of Uncertainty, Leonardo DiCaprio Lands a Role He’s Very Unlikely to Nail
This may become the actor’s most challenging (though not physically) role.
Summary:
- Martin Scorsese is bringing his biopic idea back to the works after more than twenty years of hop-on/hop-off elaboration and has already cast two big stars for the leading roles.
- The director was passionate about making a movie recounting a famous singer’s life back in the 2000s, but the project was eventually canceled in 2017.
- Though the recent news may come as a confirmation of the movie’s revival, not everything is that clear as it’s the singer’s family that gets to decide first.
Seems like Martin Scorsese’s long-suffering movie project is finally happening — but so far there’s no certainty whether it’s a good idea or not.
With all the obstacles on its way that turned into decades of waiting followed by a cancellation, the film has something even more challenging for the actor in the leading role and Scorsese’s favorite.
According to Variety’s reports, the proclaimed director made it to settling his long-standing biopic about Frank Sinatra starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the famous singer and Jennifer Lawrence as Sinatra’s second wife, actress Ava Gardner.
The film has been in Scorsese’s mind ever since the early 2000s, then it seemingly ceded to the director’s numerous gangster crime movies and eventually was entirely canceled in 2017 — as Scorsese admitted, he wouldn’t be able to do it properly the Sinatra’s family wasn’t going to greenlight the project after all.
Another problem at that time was that the director feared portraying Frank Sinatra in a wrong way which could result in a serious backlash and jeopardize his impeccable career.
As Scorsese put it, the singer’s figure is so grand and complex that rebuilding his image for the cinema screen would require a huge participation from his family – which Scorsese doubted all along.
Now that the old project is back to being in the works, at least a part of the whole responsibility shifts to Leonardo DiCaprio. Given how meticulously the actor usually approaches every single of his roles it might be another success for him, but at the moment it’s still hard to imagine DiCaprio taking up such a huge role with so many versatile and new aspects to twist on the screen.
Despite all the concerns that Scorsese’s brand new/old idea may cause before the production starts, nothing is yet clear about whether the film will eventually see the light at all.
Currently it’s all up to Frank Sinatra’s daughter Tina who controls her father’s estate and thus is the first ever person to authorize the movie.
