Remember what King Viserys told his daughter Rhaenyra about the Targaryens' ability to control dragons back in House of the Dragon Season 1?

"The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. They're a power men should never have trifled with. One that brought Valyria its doom. If we don't mind our own histories, it will do the same to us," warned the king in Episode 1.

George R.R. Martin, the author of the book Fire & Blood which House of the Dragon is based on said in an August promo of the series that to have that special connection with the fire breathing beasts one need to be born with this blood and fire magic because it isn't just something that can be learned.

The Reason Why Rhaenyra Would Make A Better Queen Than Alicent

So, members of House Targaryen can establish this magical bond with the beasts, they can tame, and train them but this does not mean that any man is powerful enough to completely control a dragon, even a Targaryen! This was a warning from a man who himself never rode a dragon other than Balerion the Black Dread and it was not for long. Obviously he did not feel like riding one after the largest and the oldest dragon in Westeros history died.

And this is what House of the Dragon showrunner said too.

On The Official Game of Thrones Podcast, Ryan Condal revealed that Viserys never rode another dragon because he realized how unpredictable these creatures can be – amounting to no less than a true and powerful weapon of mass destruction.

Something which King Viserys warned Rhaenyra about in the first episode of the show did materialize in Season 1 finale when both young Targaryen princes failed to control their dragons. Prince Lucerys riding his minute Arrax was unable to prevent his beast from spitting fire at Vhagar.

At the same time Prince Aemond who was riding her failed to control Vhagar and the flying serpent killed Lucerys and Arrax in just one furious bite. This is actually the first time in the show that the Targaryen riders have failed to command their dragons leading to the Targaryen Civil War in Season 2.

Now imagine what can potentially happen on battlefield when powerful dragons will take to the skies and attack the armies from above. Will Targaryens' special bond with the creatures help avoid an all-out chaos or will the dragons just breathe fire left and right turning everything to ashes?

The filming of House of the Dragon Season 2 isn't expected to end until summer 2023. The release will hopefully occur sometime in 2024.
