This is going to get very complicated very fast.

Summary:

  • Before hitting the screens, Five Nights at Freddy's only existed as a massively popular video game created by Scott Cawthon
  • After the release of the movie, a fan theory appeared suggesting that the movie has been made by Fazbear's Pizza, and we are being placed as viewers in the Scott Cinematic Universe

If you've spent last several years playing Five Nights at Freddy's or watching YouTubers do so, you are probably rejoicing right now as the FNAF movie triumphs in box office and streaming.

But even if you're new to the fandom, you probably know just how important theories and speculations are for the Five Nights at Freddy's lore. The movie has even included a subtle nod to the fan community by having Game Theory's MatPat appear in a cameo.

Well, now that the movie appears to establish its own universe that is slightly different from the one shown in the games, fans have — guess what? Another theory!

Five Nights at Freddy's Movie Was Made By... Freddy Fazbear's?

Redditor Electrical-Ad-105 has come up with an interesting theory that quickly took FNAF to a whole new level of meta. According to the theory, the movie is but a way for Fazbear's Pizza to portray the eerie events of the 80s in a way that is different from the one depicted in the games.

"When William Afton dies he says “I’ll always come back” despite not knowing that he’ll come back yet? It feels more like a media company trying to fit in fan service within the confines of the FNaF universe, exemplified by the oddly comedic nature of the film. Furthermore names don’t line up just like the books but still bear resemblance (pun alarm) to real characters if that makes sense," the Redditor noted.

If this theory does somehow turn out to be true, then we as viewers might already be a part of the Scott Cinematic Universe. Remember the "Produced by Scott Cawthon Productions" line in the opening credits?

Even though FNAF creator Scott Cawthon does have a company registered under that name, the theory author believes it could also be "a production company licensed by the franchise to create these films in light of the child murdering that went on."

Now that would be an exciting meta spin on the FNAF universe, but not every fan is sure the story really needs it. As of now, we know that the movie and the game are set in different universes, even though the movies clearly take inspiration from the events of the game.

The decision to go meta would be a risky one, if not a tired cliche: after all, FNAF already has a "it was all a dream" theory regarding the fourth game, so maybe it's just enough meta for one universe.
