As much as we all love The Big Bang Theory, there is one thing you should never watch the show for: relationship advice. Chaotic, slightly dismissive of each other, cheating and jealous, there are plenty of flaws to every leading couple on the show. Of course, all the characters have grown and evolved into better versions of themselves, but it wasn't nearly enough to convince viewers of their romance.

To this day, there is a group of fans who are still bitter about Sheldon and Amy, or Howard and Bernadette. And even though Leonard and Penny aren't mentioned as often, their relationship may be the worst of the bunch.

Thanks to the need to fill the show with drama for 12 straight seasons, Penny and Leonard went through a lot as a couple. There were ups and downs in their relationship, and there were plenty of opportunities for each of them to act like a jerk. Needless to say, they both acted on them without hesitation.

The running joke about Penny being too good-looking for Leonard was always met with numerous condescending comments about her education, intelligence and job, which were much harder to take and much more hurtful in nature. The fact that Leonard went on to marry her says a lot about the nature of their relationship.

The way the marriage began also says a lot. Not only did Leonard cheat, but he couldn't find a better time to tell his bride about it, putting a lot of additional pressure on her.

Unfortunately, Penny decided to go ahead with the marriage, hoping that this accident would be buried in the past. And it was, but the trust between them could never be repaired.

While most viewers think of everyone but Raj as characters who got a happy ending, that's not the case. Penny, who never wanted to be pregnant and spend her time with children, announced that she was pregnant. This twist ruined the rest of her character development and proved that the writers never really cared about her aspirations.

Unfortunately, the fairy tale love story that The Big Bang Theory tried to push for 12 years ended up feeling shallow and exhausted. But for the sake of the pretty picture, the writers decided to turn a blind eye and keep Leonard and Penny trapped in a marriage that won't make either of them happy.
