In the never-ending debate on who is smarter, L or Light, there might have been a third party one also might want to consider.

Death Note is arguably the most iconic anime and manga, still loved by fans almost two decades after its release.

Up until these days, fans continue to debate whether the battle of the minds between L and Yagami Light could have ended differently. One Reddit theory suggests that there was definitely a way for the notorious Death Note to keep sowing chaos even after both rivals died.

The final mystery of Kira was resolved by Near — an orphan raised in Wammy's House who became L's successor. But what if the boy had the Death Note all for himself?

It's clear that Near is no less intelligent than L or Yagami, and if it just so happened that Death Note was in his hands, the consequences could have been horrific... but perfect for a sequel.

"Near would be the most effective Kira, not only being much more successful than Yagami, but still keeping the interesting character plot that we all love Light for," the theory's author, Mr-PickeJuice, suggests.

According to the theory, Near wouldn't have to deal with a lot of problems caused by government officials, since he's likely not included in any of the government databases. Besides, he already does have an access to everything that would let him become "the god of the new world."

But why would Near even want to become Kira, one might ask? The theory has an answer for that: Gifted Child Burnout. As the world's greatest detective's successor, the boy had to deal with a lot, and his mind might have suffered greatly from it even with all of the IQ resources he possesses.

"If Near were to fear that he wasn't good enough for his spot, and then suddenly had a way to 'prove his worth' even if it meant doing something as horrible as mass genocide, I think he'd take it," the Redditor continued.

Near is a character who is promising enough to set up a good sequel for Death Note, even though modern media doesn't seem done with the original storyline. There is yet another adaptation of the original manga incoming from Netflix, spearheaded by Stranger Things ' Duffer brothers. Don't get us wrong — if the new adaptation proves to be successful, then more sequels would be just a question of time.
