What a twisted take on family values.

Summary:

  • 911 was a procedural drama from Fox that recently moved to ABC.
  • Every character but one seems to be affected by some kind of childhood trauma.
  • However, the show continues to push the idea of total forgiveness, which sends mixed signals to its viewers.

There are many different reasons why people love procedural dramas. First of all, they usually consist of a large cast of characters, all of whom are relatable in one way or another. Then, there's almost no chance of running out of stories, as medical, criminal, or any other kind of incident happens over and over again.

The structures shown in such shows aren't something the majority of viewers deal with every day. In fact, in most cases, these episodes are the only window people have into the lives of professionals who risk their lives to help others in society.

Of course, in some cases, the portrayal of the system isn't as honest as viewers would like. You don't hear much about understaffed hospitals or police officers abusing their power. But the very existence of shows like this is starting a conversation, and that is good enough.

One of the things viewers seem to appreciate most about procedurals is how close the teams in these shows seem to be. They often demonstrate how the trust we place in our colleagues can mean as much or more than the trust we place in our blood relatives.

Such was the case with Fox's 911. However, fans find it hard to believe the sincerity of this message, as the show constantly pushes a double agenda.

Buck and Chimney's Parents Issue

For a story that fights so hard to spread the message that family is what we make of it, 911 is too confusing with mixed signals. The show starts off with a perfect idea that supports many people who haven't found the love they need in their households. However, everything changes as the story progresses.

Both Buck and Chimney, though coming from different households, face similar struggles with parental neglect. While they both managed to grow up to be decent people with great values, 911 still forced the idea of most traditional family values upon them. As a result, those who did not deserve forgiveness received it with almost no hesitation.

The idea of forgiving someone who has hurt you in order to become a better person can be as hurtful as it is helpful. Sometimes people do not deserve forgiveness, but they do deserve to understand the weight of the consequences of their actions. By withholding this outcome, 911 sends very mixed signals to its viewers, who want nothing more than justice for their favorites.

At this point, the only character who doesn't seem to be horribly affected by any sort of family negligence in the past is Bobby. To see whether it will stay this way in the future, you can go ahead and tune in to the premiere of 911's season 7 on March 14, 2024, on ABC.
