But nothing can take the fandom’s happiness away.

Summary:

  • For years, 911 viewers have insisted on the romantic feelings between Eddie Diaz and Evan Buckley.
  • In the show's 100th episode, the writers finally confirmed at least some of the fans' suspicions by making Buck a canonical bisexual.
  • But that doesn't mean that Eddie, who's now in a relationship with a woman, will jump at the chance, as the series’ showrunner teases.

When the news broke that Fox's original series 911 had been picked up by ABC for season 7, no one could have imagined just how much this move would change the show for the better. Season 7 so far has been a true renaissance for the already great procedural, and things only get better.

One of the greatest gifts to viewers who have stuck with the show for 100 episodes has been the moment of self-exploration for Buck. Driven by his jealousy of Eddie, he ended up being quite intimate with Tommy. The question now is, will he be able to see the clear projection that is going on here?

Are Buck and Eddie Canon?

While there's still no official word on whether or not the two firefighting besties will get together this season, it's safe to say that Buddie is closer to being canon than ever before. As Evan embarks on his journey of self-exploration with Tommy, he will surely begin to understand his feelings for Eddie a little better.

Whether or not Eddie is ready to reciprocate his feelings is a whole other conversation. One that could potentially ruin the celebratory mood the fandom has gotten into. Speaking to TV Insider about what comes next, showrunner Tim Minear gave a nerve-wracking update on Eddie's character:

“Right now, Eddie’s with a woman. Eddie’s been married to a woman. Eddie has a child with a woman. Eddie also has very complicated feelings about, I think, his place in the world. I don’t know if they’re the same exact issues that Buck has, but we’ll be exploring some of that with Eddie coming up actually in the next episode as well,” he said.

On the one hand, this is a very fair comment. On the other hand, looking at Buck's dating history so far, no one would ever suggest that he's anything but straight, so Marisol's presence, as well as any of the other former girlfriends of these two, does not do a very good job of convincing the audience that Buck and Eddie's friendship will remain purely platonic.

So far, 911 has done a great job of portraying all kinds of relationships and characters. The procedural already has some canonically queer characters, like the lesbian couple Hen and Karen, so there is no doubt that the arc of Buck's sexuality will be handled well, whether that means he gets together with Eddie or finds someone else along the way.

If you're interested in seeing how the friends’ conversation goes in episode 5, You Don't Know Me, be sure to tune in to ABC on Thursday, April 11, so you don't miss a thing.
