What is Gyeongseong Creature About?

In 1945, two travelers arrive in Gyeongseong – a man and a woman who have come to the capital of occupied Korea to search for their wife and mother, with whom contact was many years ago. With only one clue in hand, a pencil drawn portrait of the missing woman, Yoon Jung-won and his daughter Yoon Chae-ok get to work.

Meanwhile, local rich man Jang Tae-sang gets into trouble – the police officer forces him to find his pregnant mistress, as Tae-sang is known to offer services for finding people. However, the time is limited – the woman must be found by the end of the cherry blossom season.

The trio's paths cross when Tae-sang asks the travelers to help find the woman in exchange for finding a portrait artist. A long search leads them to a local Japanese hospital, where the military is conducting monstrous experiments on prisoners of war.

It Is a Fantasy Show With Strong Historical Background

Despite the fantastic plot, the screenwriters added fragments of Japanese occupation history to the drama. It can be assumed that the Japanese military and scientists in the show came from the notorious Unit 731 – a specially created secret unit of the Japanese Armed Forces that conducted research in the field of biological weapons, and conducted terrible experiments mainly on prisoners of war.

At the beginning of the Episode 9, there is a footage that may seem unrelated to the plot. In fact, they are real photos confirming the atrocities of Unit 731 – the director and screenwriter of the series confirm it in one of the interviews.
