Get ready for a proper scare.

Amazon used to be just an online platform where you could buy literally anything, but now it is a company with its own streaming service that produces high-quality originals and has a library full of exciting projects.

This time we focus on the horror genre – there is something to watch on Prime Video, even for those who think they have seen it all.

1. When Evil Lurks, 2023

Two brothers, Pedro and Jaime, find the mutilated body of a man in a remote village. It turns out that he was an exorcist who tried to perform a ritual and cast out a demon from a local man. The possessed man's mother is certain that evil forces will now break out into the real world and take over everyone. The brothers decide to help the woman, but their actions only help the demon.

When Evil Lurks turned from a story about a failed act of altruism into one of the most uncomfortable, cruel and unpleasant horror films of our time, without a doubt a must-see for all fans of the genre.

2. Terrified, 2017

In a small suburb of Buenos Aires, terrifying events are happening to the inhabitants of three houses. An unknown and invisible force brutally kills a woman in front of her husband. At night, a terrifying monster appears at the neighbor's bed. A boy who recently died under the wheels of a car rises from his grave, returns home from the cemetery, and sits down at the kitchen table.

A team of experienced paranormal experts – a doctor and a former police officer, led by a homicide detective – sets out to find the cause of the unexplained and eerie incidents.

3. Late Night with the Devil, 2023

In Colin and Cameron Cairnes' found-footage retro-horror, the producers of a popular late-night show starring Jack Delroy decide to boost ratings with a Halloween special. Psychics and skeptics are invited as special guests. Viewers are given the opportunity to side with one or the other.

From the beginning, the show does not go according to plan: the call of the otherworldly forces turns into a real tragedy not only for the participants of the program, but also for the host himself.

Late Night with the Devil has been on everyone's lips in recent months, partly due to the movie's use of AI-generated imagery. But that has not stopped the horror film from earning record high reviews on Rotten Tomatoes – 97% from critics and 81% from audiences.

4. The Black Phone, 2021

The movie is set in the late 70's in Northern Colorado. An unknown maniac is kidnapping and brutally killing children. The main character, 13-year-old Finney, becomes the killer's next victim. While in captivity, the boy suddenly makes contact with the dead children who were once in his place.

The plot of The Black Phone is based on the story of the same name by Joe Hill, the eldest son of Stephen King. In both the novel and the movie, it's hard not to feel the signature atmosphere of King's prose – the oppressive tension of a small town, the indifference of adults, and the everyday violence – which doesn't prevent The Black Phone from remaining a completely independent story.

5. Sinister, 2012

A writer moves his family into a new house where a terrible crime was committed a year ago. The man soon finds tapes related to the incident and seems to unleash a demonic entity.

Sinister is rightly called one of the most successful horror films of the last decade and one of the scariest horror films in general. All this is thanks to director Scott Derrickson (who also made the aforementioned The Black Phone), who knows the genre inside and out and conveys the most intense range of emotions.

Sinister begins as a typical scary story about a bad house, but turns out to be an extremely intimidating and fresh project. Derrickson manages to build up the atmosphere masterfully – and the grainy images shot with an 8mm camera provide the most eerie scenes of the movie.

6. Speak No Evil, 2022

If you're a fan of modern, elevated horror, then you should definitely take a closer look at the Danish-Dutch movie Speak No Evil.

While on vacation in Italy, a Danish family meets a charming Dutch family who are raising a mute son. A short but warm meeting ends with an invitation to visit: a few months later, the characters go to visit their new acquaintances in the Dutch wilderness.

There, the nice family shows their true colors – they admit that they have been lying about themselves, and also begin to behave extremely unpredictably.

7. The Descent, 2005

Six friends plan a spelunking adventure in the caves of the Appalachian Mountains. The outing has also a psychotherapeutic purpose: one of the women, Sarah, lost her husband and daughter in a car accident a year ago, and for some reason her best friend Juno did not give her the support she needed.

It soon turns out that the women have entered an unexplored cave that has been inhabited for a long time, and strangers are not welcome here.

British director Neil Marshall's exemplary speleological horror spawned many imitations and made caves a popular setting for horror films for some time. But none of them managed to top the original. Even after almost 20 years, The Descent remains the most intensely claustrophobic horror film ever made.

8. Pearl, 2022

2022 marked the beginning of the era of Mia Goth, now the reigning scream queen. In a short period of time, three horror films starring the actress have been released: Infinity Pool, X and its prequel Pearl. Now the last part of the universe – MaXXXine is coming.

Mia Goth plays a young girl named Pearl, who lives on a farm with an overbearing mother and a sick father. The young woman dreams of becoming a star, but in addition to the craving for the stage, she is also overcome by a thirst for violence. Pearl is Mia Goth's finest hour, and the actress' duet with director Ti West is one of the best film collaborations to date.
