7 Underrated TV Shows That Only Lasted For a Single Season 

The TV series industry is overflowing with so many different types of series that it's almost impossible to keep up. Frankly, it's not even necessary. We choose what to watch based on our favorite genres, actors, and let's face it, marketing strategies work on us, too.

That's why some shows become popular and last for many seasons instead of the planned two or three chapters, and the others get canceled or just don't have the energy to continue after the first season. Here are ten perfect examples of shows that fans wholeheartedly wished lasted more than for just a single season.

1. Last Resort (2012-2013)

Fans of the series were devastated to learn that the show was canceled after the first season, but at least they got the whole thing, because it seems that the show could have been wrapped up even in the middle of it. The reason is too serious a plot, which follows military life and nuclear launch orders. When the U.S. submarine crew is faced with a difficult dilemma, they have to take the action into their own hands.

2. Awake (2012)

This ABC series starring Jason Isaacs did not have very high ratings, but the fans of complicated sci-fi dramas loved it too much. The story of the series revolves around Detective Michael Britten, who got into a car accident while he was with his wife and son.

Unfortunately, his wife didn't make it, but his son survived and they went on with their lives. But this is only the first reality... What Britten will find out soon enough is that there is another world he is able to live in, and this world includes his wife. Pretty twisted, huh?

3. Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000)

When talking about it, fans of the show often start arguing and claim that there were several seasons, meaning that every episode of the series was really action-packed. But unfortunately, the teen show was only with us for one season.

It kept on revealing the problems that every teenager faces at school, focusing on two major groups of students: Freaks, the cool kids with charismatic leaders, and Geeks, the sidekicks with a leader who is afraid to speak up. Their rivalry is fun to watch, though.

4. Kings (2009)

When history mixes with science fiction, it gives us something unusual to watch, and it's definitely worth it. The series follows King Silas Benjamin, the ruler of a fictional country (loosely based on the modern United States). It takes place in an alternate reality, although the plot seems to be inspired by the biblical story of King David. The show features David Shepherd, a farm boy whose actions become pivotal in the story, making the king even more powerful, only for him to benefit from the one who saved him.

5. Police Squad (1982)

Speaking of mixing genres, our favorite combination is crime and comedy. The comic relief in a show can be achieved in many different ways, but Police Squad is an old school series that went all the way to show the humor, literally.

In the show's universe, everything happens for real, like when to a policeman some person's name rings a bell, the actual bell appears on screen and rings for some time. Sounds funny enough to want to check out this old gem while waiting for Blue Bloods season 14?

6. My So-Called Life (1994-1995)

Another comparatively old series, but no less worthy, is My So-Called Life, starring Jared Leto. When you're fifteen years old, it's hard to understand the true meaning of your life. In fact, it's impossible, but it can be the best time to at least begin that journey.

The show revolves around a young girl, Angela Chase, who is trying to live her life by going through the many first things: first love, first club night, first betrayal, first skin problems, etc. Her friends are there to help her get through it all, but it's not as easy as it seems.

7. Taboo

This historical drama is a BBC series starring Tom Hardy, based on a novel the actor wrote with his father. It follows James Keziah Delaney, an adventurer who returns to London in the midst of the War of 1812 after spending many years in Africa to find that his father is dead and has left him a huge inheritance.

But not the government, and some other dangerous businessmen don't want him to rebuild his father's empire, and start a war of their own to destabilize Delaney. Will they succeed?
