Hugh Bonneville stars in this retelling of the real-life Brink’s-Mat robbery. In 1983 £26 million worth of gold bullion was stolen from a warehouse near Heathrow Airport by six armed men.

It was the biggest robbery ever at the time and sparked a major police investigation that went global. The show details the fallout from the heist and efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

2. Cannes Confidential

You might argue this show relies on something of a crime drama trope. And to a certain extent, it does. A female police officer teams up with a former con man in an effort to prove her father (a former cop) is not guilty of corruption.

Naturally, the two have a fraught relationship. But it’s played out well and this show is definitely worth a watch.

3. The Kidnapping Day

A K-drama about desperation, allegations and the way in which relationships flourish in the strangest of circumstances. Kim Myung-joon kidnaps a young girl because he sees it as the only way to raise funds to pay for his own daughter’s medical fees.

The girl he kidnaps, 11-year-old Choi Ro-hee is an incredibly smart child but has lost her memory. While Kim Myung-joon has broken the law, he has no intention of harming Choi. But he ends up on the police’s radar and becomes the subject of a manhunt for a murderer.

Gabi Mosely and her team are out to help all those missing people across America who no longer have (or never had) the attention of the media or authorities. But this is more than a job for them. Every member of the team, including Gabi, has either been kidnapped or has a missing loved one.

But Gabi’s determination to do the right thing has led her to make some dubious decisions. She’s enlisted the help of her own kidnapper who is now locked in her basement and being made to help her get inside the mind of other abductors.

5. The Irrational

This procedural is fictional but based on the 2008 non-fiction book Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions by Dan Ariely.

The show centres on Alec Mercer, a professor of behavioural psychology who is known around the world for his insights into the human psyche. Mercer uses his unique skill set to help authorities understand, detect and prevent some high-level crimes like corruption.

But a female domestic terror suspect might just be the one to get inside his head.

6. Mrs Sidhu Investigates

There’s something about an amateur sleuth doing more to solve murders than the actual detective in charge of the case that seems to have universal appeal. In this lighthearted crime drama, Meera Syal stars as Mrs Sidhu, a caterer who fancies herself as a sleuth.

While the police are concerned with her ‘meddling’, she gets results and proves to be an unlikely hero. It’s a modern take on Miss Marple in many ways and is the TV equivalent of a nice cup of tea and biscuit. You know exactly what you’re getting, but it always hits the spot.

7. Linlang

A Philippines thriller that charts the story of an ex-boxer turned seaman. All Victor Lualhati wants is an easy life with the wife he loves dearly. When he discovers she’s having an affair, Victor sets out to learn the truth of what she’s up to.

But infidelity is just the tip of the iceberg. This is a thrilling drama full of suspense and questioning that will have you on the edge of your seat.
