7. The Kitchen (2023)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%
Only available to view on Netflix, this dystopian sci-fi drama stars Kane Robinson who played Sully in Top Boy.
With work scarce, house prices at an all-time high and the welfare state a thing of the past, London is a very different place from how we know it today. Former criminal Izi (Robinson) lives in a high-rise slum and is trying to go straight. He's resigned to his way of life. But when his son contracts a serious disease, he becomes involved in a heist he hopes will allow him to get out.
6. The Black Island Sound (2020)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90%
Strange goings on off the coast of Block Island are being investigated. Dead fish are washing up on the shore and one fisherman, Tom, is starting to display strange behaviours.
When Tom goes missing, his body appears on the beach and his son sets out to find the truth behind his father's disappearance and death.
5. Jurassic Park (1993)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 91%
The original and best. A dinosaur park on an island off Costa Rica seems like a great idea. With some genetic engineering and a bit of entrepreneurial flair, what could possibly go wrong?
But tampering with dinosaur DNA might have been a bad decision. After a velociraptor kills a handler, safety experts are called in. And things are even more dangerous than first thought.
4. See You Yesterday (2019)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93%
The debut movie by up-and-coming director Stefon Bristol. CJ Walker ( Eden Duncan-Smith) is a science prodigy who, along with her friend, is building a time machine.
Despite being warned about the dangers by a teacher (Michael J Fox), the pair go back in time and play a prank on CJ's ex-boyfriend. This sets in motion a chain of events that leads to the fatal shooting of CJs brother. So, she heads back to try and right that wrong. But things aren't that simple.
3. Looper (2012)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93%
Starring Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt, this sci-fi thriller doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
In 2074, criminal gangs are finding that disposing of bodies is problematic. The solution? Send their enemies back in time and have them killed in 2044 by loopers (hitmen).
Any loopers who survive to 2074 are sent back in time and killed by their younger self. But when one older looper escapes his junior assassin, he asks Joe (Gordon-Levitt) to provide him a hideout. And he knows a secret that might make the loopers rethink everything.
2. They Cloned Tyrone (2023)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%
A sci-fi comedy starring John Boyega, Teyonah Parris and Jamie Foxx. When Fontaine, a small-time drug dealer, is shot dead by a rival, a man who owes him money (Slick Charles) could be forgiven for presuming his debt is written off.
So, when Fontaine comes to collect his money the following day (with no recollection of the fact he was shot dead), questions are asked. The pair, along with a sex worker called Yo-Yo, discover a hidden lab that contains Fontaine's body. But then things get even weirder.
1. Gravity (2013)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96%
Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star in this classic sci-fi thrill that is now more than 10 years old.
A seasoned astronaut Lieutenant Matthew 'Matt' Kowalski, (Clooney) and newbie medical engineer Dr Ryan Stone (Bullock) are on a spacewalk when they're warned about dangerous space debris heading their way.
Stone becomes detached and is rescued by Kowalski. When they return to their craft, they find the rest of the crew dead and the shuttle irreparably damaged. Their only hope of survival is to get to the ISS. But there are just 90 minutes until the debris hits them again.
