Shows to make you smile and get your heart racing.

Crime shows are a staple of most TV channels and, done well, can have us hooked.

Here are 7 of the best crime shows to stream for free on Peacock this month:

1. Irreverent

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 63%

Light-hearted for a crime show, Irreverent tells the story of a Chicago mob member who flees to a small Australian town after screwing up big time. On the other side of the world, he poses as a priest – but he’s not exactly used to dishing out forgiveness and doing good.

Naturally, those he has wronged are out to track him down and make him pay. The show includes plenty of observational humour and is easily bingeable.

2. One of Us is Lying

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 90%

What lengths will people go to, to protect their reputation? This show sees five students enter a school detention, but only four come out alive. When it becomes clear the dead boy, who leaked gossip online and gave each of the others a motive for killing, was murdered, fingers are pointed.

Despite mixed reviews from the critics, the show is full of twists and turns that keep viewers guessing throughout. The characters are decent enough and it’s a show that will get any fan of crime fiction hooked.

3. Line of Duty

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 96%

The show that gripped an entire nation. When the finale of Line of Duty aired in the UK back in May 2021, it was as eagerly anticipated as the end of Game of Thrones. The show explores institutional corruption at the highest levels of society and grabs viewers by the scruff of their necks, as you never know what might happen next.

It shot many actors into the mainstream and introduced new phrases into everyday parlance due to its huge popularity.

4. Save Me

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 100%

Utterly intriguing, Save Me (and the follow-up, Save Me Too) will have your heart racing. Nelly Rowe is a loveable character who feels he has no option but to take action when his estranged teenage daughter goes missing.

But Nelly has no idea about the world he’s getting himself mixed up in. Stephen Graham also stars, and Ade Edmondson once again demonstrates he’s more than just a comic actor. Grounded in reality, it’s complex, compelling and real edge-of-the-seat stuff at times.

5. Taboo

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 76%

Everybody knows that the golden age of the British Empire has murky undertones, and Taboo exposes what lurked beneath the façade. After spending 12 years in Africa, businessman James Delaney heads back to England following the death of his father..

When he learns that his father was poisoned, Delaney sets out to avenge the murder, while also concentrating on building a business to challenge the dominance of the East India Dock Company.

The show came in for some criticism during its first showing, but much of that was unfair. It was harshly judged alongside gentle period dramas like Downton Abbey, but this was never supposed to be compared to that sort of show.

6. The Bletchley Circle

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 85%

When a series of murders look like going unsolved, four women who served as codebreakers during WWII, try to connect the dots. Without the support of the police – and concerned about breaching the Official Secrets Act – they’re dragged deeper into a world they don’t fully grasp.

It’s a show that sets ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, and we can see how it happens. As viewers, we fear for them and root for them in equal measure.

7. Magic City

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 65%

In late-50s Miami, glamorous hotelier Ike Evans is left with no choice but to agree a deal with a local mob boss just to keep operating. Created by Miami native Mitch Glazer, the show is based on stories he heard while growing up, and shows the glitz, glamour and sordid underbelly of the hospitality industry of the time.

It’s played out against the backdrop of political and social movements of the time and is well worth a watch if you're into gangster shows.
