Gabi Mosely, a one-time kidnapping victim, now runs an agency dedicated to finding missing people. Many of the cases they work on involve people believed to have been kidnapped, and the agency is made up of people who were once kidnapped themselves or have a loved one who was.

Her secret weapon is that Sir, the man who kidnapped Gabi, is now trapped in her basement and helps her get into the minds of people like him.

2. Clean Sweep

Shelly Mohan is a struggling mother of three, married to a police officer with an eye for the ladies. But she also has a secret past that's about to catch up with her. It's a past that leads her back to the wrong side of the law. And things get even more complicated when her husband is assigned to investigate the crime she committed.

It's gripping, has some lighter moments, and is an interesting concept brought to life by high quality acting and characterisation.

3. Dahaad

If you think you're tired of the serial killer cliché, this show is for you. It veers away from the staple portrayal of a mass murderer and gives us something far more complex and engaging.

It's a crime drama that has something to say about modern society, and it succeeds as much for its acting as for its story. Dahaad will keep you hooked from start to finish and is a police procedural based on real events.

4. Deadloch

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 100%

A black comic crime drama that somehow manages to successfully navigate some pretty obvious tropes. When the body of a local man washes up on the shore of Deadloch just before the town's winter festival, two police officers must work together to solve the mystery of how he got there.

The two detectives have vastly different personalities and don't like each other. And as their investigation progresses, they begin to realise that there is more to the case than meets the eye.

5. Will Trent

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 89%

Based on the series of novels featuring the titular character, the show's main strength is its portrayal of Will Trent, an investigator with a sad backstory and a complicated personal life. Despite this, he's a top performer and a likeable character.

Trent is unpopular within the ranks of law enforcement, having recently brought some high-ranking colleagues to justice. But that doesn't bother him. He's a brooding genius, focused on solving crimes and fixing certain aspects of his personal life, not making friends.

6. Black Snow

Rotten Tomatoes Score 100%

Jumping back and forth between two time periods, Black Snow sees a modern-day detective investigate a cold case in which we get to know the victim before her tragic end.

When a time capsule from 1994 is opened in 2022 as part of a high school's centenary celebrations, the words of Isabel Baker, who was buried before her murder later that year, provide the police with new clues.

It's an intriguing concept, supported by quality performances.

7. Murder in Big Horn

Rotten Tomatoes Score – 86%

Highlighting the rise in deaths and disappearances of indigenous women in Canada and the US in the first half of the 21st century, this documentary allows families and investigative journalists to detail the scale of a problem that has been kept under wraps.

The stats are shocking. In Canada, the murder rate of Indigenous women was six times the average between 2001 and 2015, and in the US, a third of Indigenous women will be victims of sexual assault in their lifetime. Of these, 67% will be committed by non-Indigenous perpetrators.

Murder in Big Horn explores why this is the case and what is being done to protect Native women and investigate these crimes.
